  1. Loyalty to a club should be praised and not ridiculed. If Messi is a coward, he would have left years ago and joined a built-for-success team like Juve, City, PSG etc. Instead, he stayed loyal to Barca. However there comes a time when enough is enough and I don’t fault him one bit for wanting out now. Unless of course if Bartomeau resigns. If Messi does leave, how I wish that he would join Liverpool, but I can’t see that happening.

    1. Messi hasn’t won anything without Barca, but Barca won the Euros and World Cup without him. Messi is a great luxury to have, he’s just not built to be the centerpiece. Messi knows (Espania er Barca) without Barca he’s been exposed that’s why he’s cowardly stayed put all these years.

    2. @Hengel Andrews…. so the club Barca won the World Cup for countries? In which universe did that happen? Lol! Anyway, Messi has carried Barca (and Argentina) on his back countless times during his career, so it makes no sense to imply that he is nothing without Barcelona. It’s actually the other way around – Barca is nothing without Messi, as has been proven by the mostly dismal performances when Messi is out injured or when he has a bad game. In the current team, nobody can step up to fill the void.

The bottom line for me is that I respect loyalty to one team. It’s not something that we see happening too often and it’s just sad that when a player does show loyalty, he is seen as a coward by some.

    3. Gandrewjm You know Espania’s 2010 WC winner starting 11 played for Barca, so don’t “lol” because you know football. If I had said Bayern Munich’s won the 2014 World Cup you’d know I was talking about the German National team… Messi is like Asafa Powell all his gold medals came on relay teams that didn’t need him, but with him they set world records. Excuses aside, he’s done nothing outside of Barca and it would bolster his legacy to go win somewhere else.

    4. @Hengel Andrews eh no. If I remember correctly Barcelona had 8 or 9 players in the 23 man squad, with Real Madrid having 6. In the final itself Barcelona had 6 of the starters. I’m not sure how this relates to Messi in any way. As for the Champions League, Barcelona have never won it without Messi in the lineup (since he started playing professionally).

I agree with you that if Messi goes to another club and is successful, then that would build on his impressive legacy even more. What I’m saying is that if he wants to stay loyal to one team then I find that admirable, and not cowardly. It’s like Kobe staying with the Lakers, Stockton with the Jazz, Gerrard with Liverpool, Jordan with the Bulls etc etc. (Please note that I’m not counting end of career moves like to the MLS or lesser teams).
