@Sarteck Sorry – I must respond with a small novel……
Sadly, whilst it is growing steadily (approx 40% now) there remains a very high percentage of US citizens that have not got a passport, and have not ventured out of their country to see what the rest of the world is like. I deal with Americans almost daily with my work – have visited many times over the years (and travelled the world several times round). The statement from the previous gentleman is typical of my American work colleagues who have not taken the opportunity to expand their mind with travel. There are too many in the USA that are brain-washed with the idea that the USA is the best in the world at everything…..
I guarantee that there are very few from my country (Sweden) that travel to USA for medical procedures – why would we? Our medical system works very well, and our citizens sleep well with the knowledge that they will not be left destitute with medical bills if they fall ill (regardless of your economic standing). This is the case with the vast majority of modern societies… and this approach is echoed by the high scores in various world indexes (e.g.. UN’s latest World Happiness Report – spoiler alert – Finland won…. grrrrrrr). As for moving to the USA….. sorry no, I had the opportunity a few years back – but no…. not then, and definitely not now with the current unrest that has boiled to the surface and is actively encouraged under your current president (hopefully you will fix that aberration today).
Education is a joke in the USA – with only the wealthy or athletically gifted (scholarships) able to afford a quality education. The alternative is to be burdened with crippling student loans for decades after completion of tertiary studies. My mother was a school principal (retired), and my sister is a head teacher (current) – both in public schools… their profession is highly respected – and their salaries are comparable to other 4 year university degree disciplines. That is not the case in the USA’s public school systems. The USA has excellent universities – but the rest of the countries public education systems are far from this level. I do very much agree that trade schools and/or apprenticeship programs are extremely important alternatives for many people (university is not for everyone)…. certified plumbers, builders, electricians etc are very well paid here!
The “unhappy” people in the USA are likely displeased with the current state of affairs because they know that the direction that current leadership is taking them is not in the best long term interest of the country as a whole. They are frustrated that a minority in the country has taken control, and is determined to turn the USA inwards into some sort of insular state – which fears the “other” and the unknown. Too many Trump supporters measure success by how much money they have – and “win win win” is the be all and end all…. meanwhile their fellow citizens are left behind to rot. Though…. I do empathise with many Trump supporters… there are a lot of people that feel that the system has let them down, and their support of Trump is their way to fight back against the system that failed them. They see their farms, small towns and industry crumbling….. society has grown desperate – which leads to crime and substance abuse. Peoples health is declining – many on welfare or disabilities….. all the while they see people living in the big cities earning big money, famous people seem like demi-gods – what about me?…… Trump has come along, tapped into this resentment and has used the blame game effectively – saying that it is the fault of the “elites” that you are suffering… it is China, Mexico, NATO, WHO, UN, EU… they did this…… and only Trump can fix the problem. But you know… that is the con. Trump has no idea how to fix the problem – because he does not even know what the problem is. He has sat in the white house (when he is not golfing) for 4 years now – and still blames everyone else for the USA’s problems. Small hint Donald – the biggest issue you need to solve is the deeply uneven wealth distribution in the USA – and all the influencing factors that feed into that imbalance.
Hopefully the USA will make some better decisions today…… but looking further into the future, some deeper balancing is required in order to help heal the divides that exist and restore trust in the institutions that exist to serve the American people. e.g. remove money from politics, add some rules to filter out dodgy political leaders (tax returns, mental & medical tests, FBI background check, Security clearance check etc), remove political appointments/influence to departments that should be apolitical (judicial, law enforcement, intelligence, diplomats, etc) – the list is long…..
