Why Republicans made ‘cancel culture’ their latest cause

Republicans making a big deal about Mr. Potato Head’s alleged “cancelling” is part of their bigger strategy to focus on cancel culture as their new wedge issue. In this latest episode of The Point, CNN’s Chris Cillizza explains why changes in society don’t *necessarily* mean something is being cancelled.

    1. I think CNN is a joke. This is not a real issue. God forbid they talk about labor or healthcare. Keep responding to ridiculous republican talking points and Ill keep considering your network a clown show at the cirucs.

    2. @D.O.A_ Unpossibles You can’t stereotype some one who doesn’t agree with you then play victim when its done 2 you. I never said taking every gun I said banned assault rifles. There is not s necessity to have that kind of fire power unless your going on a shooting spree.

    1. @Don Jindra BTW, someone asking them to examine the meaning behind the name they chose so long ago is not cancel culture. Neither is the publisher of the Dr Seuss books deciding their own to discontinue three books in the entire library of Dr Seuss books is not cancel culture. Or Hasbro choosing to drop the “Mr” while keeping both Mr and Mrs potato Head or Disney+ adding a warning in front of some episodes of the Muppets. All that is is people and corporations making their own decisions.

    2. @CSharp Yes, both are cancel culture. It’s insanity. It has to stop. It’s going to backfire in a huge way and we’re going to be stuck with Republican rule.

    3. @CSharp You:: “someone asking them to examine the meaning behind the name they chose so long ago is not cancel culture. Neither is the publisher of the Dr Seuss books deciding their own to discontinue three books”

Me: “Yes, both are cancel culture.”

It doesn’t really matter what you want to call it. It’s a pandering environment intent on cultural ‘purification.’ It expects unflinching, non-critical allegiance. But quite a few people will reject this mono-culture, even people you might think are easy prey. Those people won’t walk on egg shells to please the mob. They’ll say what they want, when they want. Just like in the days of McCarthyism, people with character will suffer through the scorn. They’ll be looked back on as the most reasonable people in a hysterical era.

    4. @Don Jindra Is there anything you DON’T consider cancel culture? If a TV show you watch is cancelled and the network doesn’t offer you an explanation is that cancel culture?
Look. the point was, and still is, 1) the chicks don’t owe you squat
      2) not everything you don’t agree with is cancel culture, no matter how much you insist it is.

  1. I mean, I understand the point, but this really shouldn’t be an issue being debated on Capitol Hill.

    1. But if they don’t waste time bitching about potatohead they might have to talk about real issues, like their voter suppression bills, or the radicalization of right wing Christians, or the racism inherent in lawbenforcement

    2. @MIram US why do we care what she thinks? She is a professional liar
Anyone with an ounce of intelligence and desire to live in the real world doesn’t trust a thing that comes out of her mouth. But I have a feeling the truth is is meaningless to you

    3. It’s beyond Stupid to me,like there’s no other real issues Yet the Rep’s seem like the loosing school kids who wanna take it out on everyone & that’s sad to me.

    1. @m douglas yes and so did more than 81 million other people, the most votes in the history of the United States 👍👍😎😎😎

    2. @My Name you mean things like ” IF YOU DON’T VOTE FOR ME, YOU AIN’T BLACK,” and ” I DON’T WANT MY KIDS GROWING UP IN A RACIAL JUNGLE” or the ” YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SLIGHT INDIAN ACCENT TO WORK IN ONE OF THESE PLACES”?!?!

      Oops that was Biden!

    3. @m jones buddy there are videos of it. First dose was December 21st. You are very ill informed

  2. Canceling GQP culture is technically impossible for lack of the same in the first place. Seems to be a Potemkin discussion. 🤓😁

    1. Democrats: Fix the trash fire left behind yet again by yet another Republican President
Republicans: MiSs PiGgY iSn’t AlLoWeD tO wEaR hIgH hEeLs AnY mOrE!!!

  3. Haha. The party that cancelled so many people for 4 years now crying about everything without even knowing what’s being “cancelled” and why.

    1. @Mister Man not sure what’s going on but Colin has his sponsors still and isn’t “exiled” by the mainstream. The 2 biggest factors of what it means to be cancelled.

    2. @Mister Man dude you lost. Don’t shame yourself. Your not even trying to make an argument. Everyone has emotion, everyone has bias. Your not even pointing out the bias. You have zero argument.

    3. @Mister Man dude I don’t watch football. I gave you an answer. Colin onhisknees went from being the best to losing big games. Maybe he got caught up in his victim hood. Being oppressed making millions.

  4. Bottom line is they made up cancel culture because there isn’t anything real to make a platform out of.

    1. Just the latest way to keep the social change hating followers hyped-up. They have nothing to offer so always need something to attack.

  5. Conservatism by definition is anti-change. It’s to hold everything back and keep it the same. Progressivism moves forward. Just keep in mind that what conservatives resist today they will fight for tomorrow when it is the new status quo.

    1. @George Houston kkk endorsed trump..im just gonna drop that right there and walk away..good night sir

    2. @Señor BeanS Yep, they did, and Trump has refuted them time and time again on video. Good night to you sir.

    1. @Chance Robinson I need TP for my bung hole!!! I AM the GREAT Cornholio! Sorry but I just had to jump in with that once you said that~IT IS the unwritten law you know. 😉😂❤😎🤘

  6. The deeper signal Republicans are responding to is their accurate sense that THEY are vanishing. Reality is canceling them, one by one.

    1. @end the lockdown !!! Based on getting the most citizen votes also known as the popular vote. The Electoral College can be manipulated. As we have seen and almost seen again with those false voter fraud claims. Trump lost but you are very special people stand back and stand by.

    2. @Al because republicans are all about me and I. They don’t care about the other people. That’s why they’re republicans. If they had empathy, they’d be anything else almost.

    1. @Uncle Reggie So how do you feel about that same man leading an armed mob in an attempt to overthrow our government and hang his OWN Vice President? Lemme guess, that didn’t happen or it was Aunt Tifa.

    2. @Jarry Sciligo I don’t think your summary is unbiased, objective or entirely true, so I cannot answer this question with a clear conscience.

  7. The sad fact is he’s preaching to the choir, no one on the fence about these issues (or on the other side) will ever watch this and change their mind o.o

  8. I find it incredibly ironic that Republicans are “standing up” for the Muppets when they spent decades trying to cancel “socialist” Sesame Street.

    1. The real reason they wanted it cancelled is there were brown people on it and they tried to teach kids how to count in Spanish.

    2. Thor Hultafors The only reason you find it ironic, if you actually do (which I don’t believe is the case), is because you don’t know history.

  9. Republicans throw fits like little children when they don’t get their way! Wonder who they get that from……

    1. Bro, y’all literally got upset and threw a fit OVER A FUCKING POTATO 😂😂😂😂😂 Wth are you talking about 😂

  10. ” Change ” for many is difficult enough , let alone for Reich-wingers that adamantly refuse and resist any progress that requires introspection and equity in society .

  11. Exactly; nothing is being “cancelled”. Dr. Suess, Mr. & Mr.s Potato head, and the Muppets are still here. These nut jobs simply don’t really have anything else better to complain about.

  12. Well it’s not like they can run on policy “Yes vote for me I want to cut your social security so I can fund another $1 Trillion dollar tax cut for billionaires. Then after that I will work tirelessly to remove your access to healthcare” – average Republican

  13. “This guy is trying to cancel my ability to believe in cancel culture!”

    Trumpster logic 101
