The UK government has signed a contract for a company to conduct the first human challenge studies for the novel coronavirus. Healthy volunteers will be vaccinated, then deliberately infected with the virus in a controlled setting. Up to 19 volunteers at a time will take part in the trials, which will be held at the Royal Free Hospital in London, which houses a Biosafety Level 3 ward. CNN’s Phil Black reports.

👍 Coronavirus has a 99.8% recovery rate for healthy people and well over 90% recovery rate for elderly with underlying conditions. This is going to be with us for decades so everybody better get used to this as it is going to be as common as the flu. And the vaccination is going to be as successful as the flu vaccine is, if you call that success. It will come down to herd immunity in the end.

@TheMrParagon Because they are testing vaccines, not treatments. A vaccine doesn’t do anything for someone that is already sick. You have to give someone the vaccine when they are healthy, then hope they get infected to see if the vaccine works. In a challenge trial, you eliminate the chance that the vaccinated person just won’t get infected.

I see little difference between this young man (and others like him) and people volunteering to enter the military and requesting a combat assignment. Both are willing to put themselves at hazard for a higher purpose.
