ACLU Pres Warns America Still Has Long Road Of Reckoning Ahead | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

As Derek Chauvin’s trail for the murder of George Floyd begins, MSNBC’s Ari Melber reminds viewers that accountability for police brutality is just one piece of the wider challenge and that this trial is a response to a steady problem advocates want to change. As the rate of U.S. police shootings and killings holds steady, the goal of civil rights leaders is not to merely “put police on trial,” but to reform a system. ACLU President Deborah Archer joins Melber to discuss these goals, and asserts she’s “not sure we’ve made the progress that anyone has hoped for.” (This interview is from MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber, a news show covering politics, law and culture airing nightly at 6pm ET on MSNBC. ). Aired on 03/29/2021.

  1. Now it’s time for the cops to cry about how hard and scary their job is and do some character assassination.
5 cops in 15yrs. How many “justified” shootings is that? Disgusting

    1. They Might not have to be in fear for their safety if they show people of all races they serve to not have to fear the cops. Self defence is a big motivator when you live in fear.

    1. @Margaret Nicol No I’m 10 like you. America is sick because of Democrats and liberals. BTW become more original you’re very typical.

    2. @THE TRUTH HURTS YOU! So if any benefits come your way as a result of a Democratic government you’re going to say ”no thanks”. Is that right?

  2. 1619 – 1865: Slavery
    1870 – 1950: Jim Crow
    1980 – 2000: War on “drugs”
2015 – 2021: White nationalism and GQP’s new Jim Crow

Yup, hard to fight hundreds of years of racial oppression.

    1. @Wesley C. The greatest “voter suppression” are fraudulent votes. Requiring voter ID is hardly “suppression” it protects the legitimate votes. They are currently discussing “vaccine IDs” and those same people are claiming voter IDs are “oppressive”.

    1. @Waynes World its not about ID and you know it. It’s about voter suppression taking and limiting the voting hours and removing drop boxes.

    2. @Waynes World I no longer drive, don’t buy alcohol, and therefore no longer purchase a driver’s license. I do not have an ID. And I’m white (but I identify as beige).

  3. A Tribute in Memory of Mr. George Floyd

Don’t close the door please let the light shine in.
Whispering sounds that echo off the walls.
Straps laced too tightly no room for me to move.
    A blinding glance confuses me.

Words can’t express the pain of false bravado.
Piercing stares from the tormented few.
    All sides suffering
Can’t take this life no more.
Nothing to chance for a man to break free.

I only need one eye to be open.
One ear to listen to what I’m trying to say.
Just take a moment to come inside and stand with me.
    Everyday’s a nightmare
I need someone to come save me.

As I lay distressed pleading please help me mama.
I see no beacon my life’s growing dim.
Robbed of tomorrow can’t help those who were chosen.
It’s up to you where we go from here.

If I could rise I’d speak up for my freedom with every breath I take that God has given me.
Come take a chance and take a stand in harmony.
There will be no tomorrow if we don’t unite to be free.

The violence that follows will only fuel their hate.
Take the path that carries your voice of change.
Let’s lay to rest and and put an end to this shame.
Be the hope your children need you to be.

If I could rise I’d speak up for my freedom with every breath I take that God has given me.
Come take a chance and take a stand in harmony.
Everyday’s a nightmare I need someone to come stand for me.

There will be no tomorrow if we don’t unite to be free.

Rest in Peace Mr. George Floyd

Watch “Tribute to Mr. George Floyd” on my channel. Humble Driver on YouTube

    1. Where is your tribute to all the thousands of white people who died, at the hands of these criminals??

    2. @THE TRUTH HURTS YOU!
Hmm…ignorance of American history taught from books written by racists could be lone reason of confusion. Color blindness knows no bounds.

  4. George Floyd held a gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach and pistol whipped her not to mention was high on fentanyl when arrested

    1. This may be hard for you to deal with, but this is not about Floyd’s life, it is about his death.

    2. @Branjo Snow We don’t care. Non whites murder thousands of whites. And we hear crickets.

  5. IT’S RIGHT — for Rev. Sharpton to say get off my neck.
IT’S WRONG — for Gov. Kemp to hijack the election process.
IT’S CONSTITUTIONAL — to honor what’s right and condemn what’s wrong.

  6. America is going backwards year after year, America is not doing any grand projects for their people.

  7. Compensation is long overdue and that is the problem when we ignore injustices. We don’t cure the problem. Just like we are doing with the attempted coup.

  8. George Floyd was a criminal and had a record dating back to the late 90’s, but hey, “MUH SYSTEMIC RAYCISM!”

  9. I believe WE are through with adapting—The System needs to adapt and change with Society=be humane.
