Rachel Maddow looks at how the state of Massachusetts is considering whether rising coronavirus case numbers is an indication that they reopened too much too soon and whether rolling back their reopening to an earlier stage when the numbers were declining is advisable. Aired on 8/4/2020.

  1. Since Trump refuses to take responsibility, the American people will replace him with someone that will.

Jan. 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” —CNBC interview..

Jan. 30: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment— 5 — and those people are all recuperating successfully.
    —Trump speech in Michigan.

Feb. 10: “Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do—you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases, 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.” —Trump at the White House.

Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” — Trump in a tweet.

Feb. 26: “So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck.” — Trump White House briefing.

Feb. 26: “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” — Trump press conference.

Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.” — Trump at a White House meeting.

March 4: “We have a very small number of people in this country infected. We have a big country. The biggest impact we had was when we took the 40-plus people from a cruise ship. We brought them back. We immediately quarantined them. But you add that to the numbers. But if you don’t add that to the numbers, we’re talking about very small numbers in the United States.” — Trump White House meeting..

    1. If you put some perspective on it, and combine 6 of the major European countries (Germany, italy, britain, france, spain, and belgium) you get 336 million people to the US 330 mil… roughly the same population. If you combine their deaths due to COVID, you get 159,000 to the US 158,000, again about the same. The most perplexing comparison in my opinion, is that Europeans don’t blame a global pandemic on their leaders, like the US. I submit to you that it is because they are not as childish. Change my mind

    2. My Dude those are interesting numbers that I have not compared. Half of all deaths in the US was caused by stupidity of 5 governors filling nursing homes with this virus. I’m not sure about Europe.

    3. My Dude Extremely inapt comparison. You are taking large countries that have done exceptionally well and cramming them together with countries that have done very poorly (Italy and others). Fail.

    1. You have to get things under control before you reopen…the US never did.
Even in Canada, where we did a much better job, it’s looking like we reopened to soon…and bars and young people are the problem.

  2. Education for our children is extremely important. So I absolutely agree that we must re-open our schools. But that doesn’t mean we should re-open them with in-person classroom instruction in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. We need distance learning and teleteaching now.

    1. The thing about humans as a species is that we’re amazingly adaptable to most any situation. So it’s baffling that the GOP is refusing to adapt to the pandemic and trying to conduct business like it’s still 2019. Instead, we need to be clever and think of the best way to adapt to this situation till it has passed.

    2. What they’re needing is the “babysitter” function of the elementary schools. This administration is worried about people not going back to work because there’s no one to watch the kiddos.

    3. In Mexico the government has asked all tv stations to give daily airtime as well as internet classes to present basic education classes so kids can learn from home

    4. Thing about that is not everybody has access to tech as everybody else does.(not every home is the same either) Especially now since rent isn’t being halted but economy is being slowed.

  3. “It is what it is” Virus , what VIRUS?🙊🙉🙈
Donald J Trump playing President when not busy playing golf…😈

    1. @Tessmage Tessera I realize you’re just trying to stay optimistic and maybe even spread that optimism… but the first debate will seal Dementia Joe’s fate

    2. @Harold Moops dementia Joe? 🤣😂… And you are OK with a guy that has sexual assaults ready for him, paying hush money for his infidelity, & lie about it, over 18,000 plus alternative FACTS… Facts Always Confuse TRump Supporters… But then again, birds of a feather flock together

    3. Harold Moops Hod I love it when the stupidest amongst us chime in and display their ignorance to the world. If there was a zoo the caged all the trump supporters, listing their history, arrest record, level of education and jobs and income I think the fascination alone would draw crowds

  4. The intelligent people aren’t fighting over masks or social distancing…leave that to the Faux News watchers…

    1. You so right smart people stay home unless needed, wear a mask, and social distance. Others don’t cause Fox and Trump say everything is fine under control will just disappear, you would think after thousands of lies they still listen to them

  5. Without rapid testing and tracing teams you are blind to the virus and unable to be effective in responding and applying resources. 7 months in and still no nationwide coordinated emergency response plan to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic and the damage it’s causing to the economy and the American people.

  6. brilliantly said, ty dr maddow, exactly. hiding your head in the sand while your citizens die seems to be what some governors, and trumputin, do best.
hey govs and trumputin, if cases are rising again then it is time to step back to a point where they weren’t! something that shouldn’t need to be said…smh

  7. Well said, Maddow, Covid’s countermeasures ain’t the stuff of rocket science yet so impossible to grasp or grip among the morbidly-recalcitrant lot.

  8. …as they used to say “it’s simps”, or in this case “it’s science”, or any combination of those will do the right thing

  9. Many of the YouTube Reality Asserts Itself reports address such issues. As Gov. Cuomo puts it, “You have a right to your own opinion, but you don’t have a right to your own facts”; a position often directly challenged by the Trump administration. About all you can say to someone with that perspective is that reality will assert itself.
If you don’t believe in masks or social distancing, and believe Covid19 is just a “hoax”, well, then, you may soon be quarantined, being intubation, or your body may be in a refrigerated truck.

  10. The danger of opening schools when your country has not reached a containment. As soon as that happen, the number of infection will not stop going up! Stay vigilant and safe America

  11. I’ll be damned if my kids will be petri dishes for those Aholes in the white house. When I see “their children” going (with negative tests) … I’ll send mine

  12. Covid-19 is 10 times more contagious than the flu listening to Dump and opening when they didn’t have testing figured out and wasn’t such a hot idea

  13. Melbourne, the capital of Victoria in Australia, was closed down, everyone was in isolation and the numbers way down, almost none. But then the government opposition (across the aisle) and businesses complained that they were losing money, so the city was opened in a limited capacity. Now covid numbers are on the rise, more than 700 yesterday alone. States need to completely shut down and masks should be mandatory for 21 days minimum AFTER numbers reach zero.

  14. We need to reverse opening! Seems like all protections went out the window. Stay home use masks. I was in a grocery store and could not safely distance from others. In MA
