Family of UVa student killed in Dominica files suit

The father of a University of Virginia student killed last year in the Caribbean, where she was studying abroad, is suing over her death.

The lawsuit, filed this month in federal court in Miami by David Schulman, the father of Casey Schulman, alleges negligence by the Semester at Sea program, sponsored by UVa, and several others, seeking funeral expenses and compensatory damages.

A fourth-year student, Casey Schulman, 22, was swimming Dec. 1 off Mero Beach , near Roseau , Dominica, when a small dive boat struck her.  Dominican authorities charged Andrew Armour , the boat’s captain, with manslaughter more than six months later.

The trip was organized by students independently of Semester at Sea activities, a UVa spokesman said at the time. Semester at Sea is a 12- to 15-credit study abroad program that takes students around the world on the Explorer, a 590-foot ship. UVa took over as the academic sponsor of Semester at Sea in 2006.

Reached at home, Schulman’s mother declined to comment. A message left for the family’s Miami-based attorney, Robert Parks, was not returned by press time.
