The decision to return to normal commercial activities must be premised upon the risk of virus transmission in the close quarters of public transportation and workspaces. The amount of risk depends on the quality of the respirator masks we wear and touch hygiene we practice but this is complicated because this virus is transmitted when the victim is asymptomatic and the respirators weren’t designed to stop viral transmission from a patient, in fact, most of our
respirators will make the disease worse by forcing the wearer to re-breath
virus. Our gloves also allow transfer from surface to surface. The solution is
for PPE manufacturers to sell us gloves infused with disinfectant and
respirators that filter the exhausted breath separately from the air intake.
The best respirators are the full face HAZMAT Level C/B respirator masks that
have a new type of P100 or N95 filter cartridge that has its flow reversed to
operate properly on the exhaust valve. A N95 exhaust filter for specific
respirators can be constructed from accessory parts that I’ve listed below. The
typical N95 respirator mask with a valve, although very effective in preventing
infection, does not filter the exhausted breath so it does not prevent
transmission if you become infected. Moreover, both the N95 and surgical masks
will trap the virus so that viral droplets are re-inhaled into the lungs of the
victim where it could exponentially increase the viral load and severity of the
infection yielding higher mortality rates. The N95 valve helps limit virus
accumulation inside the mask so it should be augmented to exhaust the
contaminated breath into a filter “pillow” attached to the outside of the
exhaust valve to capture the virus laden spittle and airborne virus away from
the inhalation portion of the mask. The exhaust filter can further protect the
N95 filter from projectile droplets and reduce the potential for transmission
to others or back to one’s own lungs. In the short term, you could add a
surgical mask on top of your N95 valve or even add two cloth masks with a hole
in the first one to allow breath vented from the valve to be trapped between
the two surgical masks. This starts to get costly over time relative to the much
safer full or half face respirator with and exhaust filter, so invest in the
better mask now as a vaccine is a year away. EMTs and hospitals could better
treat patients if a barbed hose bib were added to these respirators as it would
allow external attachment of an oxygen supply tube for virus free ambulance transport
and hospitalization. Removal of an inflow filter cartridge from the mask would
allow attachment of a ventilator hose too. The Level C/B respirator
modification is necessary to reduce the mortality rate in patients and to allow
the medical staff to continue working safely, even if they get infected and are
asymptomatic. I’m not a medical professional consult a respiratory therapist, but
the exhaust filter part #s are: Honeywell NS76008A, Chinese ST S100-3 Full Face
Respirators, Honeywell North 5500 & 7700, NASUM 8200 half face respirators or
similar mask with a screw-on cylindrical valve guard; Weld On #3 acrylic
solvent; NS80867 exhaust valve guard; NS750035 Piggyback Adapter; NS750015
Filter Holder; NS7506N95 HEPA N95 Pre-filter. Just use a hole drill on the
adapter to almost match the exhaust guard cylinder diameter, sand the adapter
to fit the guard and fuse the joined surfaces with solvent. The Filter Holder must
be hole drilled to an inside diameter of ~2” to relieve exhaust backpressure
and add a bit of rigid mesh to keep the filter flat.
