Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Thursday she is stepping down as New Zealand’s leader and will not contest this year’s general elections.

Fighting back tears, Ardern told reporters in Napier that Feb. 7 will be her last day in office.

“I am not leaving because it was hard. Had that been the case I probably would have departed two months into the job. I am leaving because with such a privileged role, comes responsibility, the responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead, and also, when you are not. I know what this job takes, and I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It is that simple,” she said.

Ardern had faced a tough election campaign this year. Her liberal Labour Party won reelection two years ago in a landslide of historic proportions, but recent polls have put her party behind its conservative rivals.

    1. @Fran maud If she disappears completely and the next PM comes in spouting the same garbage, we’ll know Klaus most likely fed her to his pet piranhas. The WEF, like SPECTRE, does not tolerate failure.

  1. Funny – I wonder what penalties the (laughably ineffectual) New Zealand Armed Forces impose on recruits/conscripts who decide they “no longer have enough in the tank’ to drive the tank?

    Compare/Contrast

    1. My guy there’s no need for self-defense. Social accountability is strong there. That’s not a basic right. They have the right to free speech they are freer than the United States

    2. @Harth lies, telling a joke can land you in jail. anything that criticizes the government is considered “hate speech”

    1. @Baited how does that not affect you? Everyone should be crying when government dictatorship shuts down a country because of just 1 new case. That’s insane to me that people like you are perfectly OK with that. It tells me you actually like government overreach and power grabs.

  2. If your pilot says he’s run out of fuel in mid-air, what do you do? This woman is crash land his country😆

  3. You should’ve had enough sense ,Jabcinda , to know that you NEVER “ had enough in the tank” to begin with .. you never had enough brains you never had enough morals you never had enough integrity. You never had enough of anything ,EXCEPT a whole lot of evil , but that’s beside the point… How about a lovely set of IRON BRACELETS as a parting gift?

  4. Women give up too easily when life gets tough. We a need a strong leader who won’t quit halfway through the race.
