Protests erupted in Memphis and cities across the country Friday and more demonstrations were planned for the weekend as the nation reacted to brutal footage of the killing of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police.

Demonstrators plan to rally in New York City, Memphis and Baltimore, among other cities on Saturday.

Amid freezing temperatures Friday night, more than 100 protesters shut down an interstate bridge connecting Tennessee and Arkansas in Memphis. Some chanted "killer cops have got to go."

Protesters locked arms and chanted "we ready, we ready, we ready for y'all," as they marched from the bridge and toward downtown. Onlookers cheered from their balconies.

  1. Police said that Tyre was stopped for a traffic violation and he resisted arrest slamming the car at the police car causing the police madness. The police dragged him off the vehicle, and he ran away again. The police handcuffed him and beat him as shown in the video.

    1. That’s a cynical and disgusting thing to say. What have you done, besides hide behind an online avatar and criticize?

  2. We need more special unit police to come back. Gang squads particularly, so they can end the majority of gun violence without infringing on others

  3. The police officers should be held accountable without a doubt. I still wish the young man just put his hands behind his back and let the officers cuff him though. Police and civilians both need better training when interacting with each other.

  4. affirmative action at its finest! hire people who have not done the hard work through university higher education and you get a nice “diversified” “equity” police department! you voted for it

  5. We as Americans have to stop treating each other like enemies, letting divisive race-baiters like Sharpton, politicians, bad cops, criminals, and celebrities influence how we feel about ourselves and those around us.

We can have our differences, and voice them. But this level of hate and inhumane treatment of a fellow human is just pure evil. It cannot continue. We have to be better than this.

  6. Memphis is rough. There’s a need for special units. But, they got to be trained properly. I feel these officers were not, the horrific video displays this clearly. I feel leadership should be held accountable in this situation as well.
