Reef bleaching reported as oceans faced warmest year ever

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is facing another bleaching event as 2021 was declared the hottest for the world's oceans in a new climate report.

The reef came under stress over the Australian summer when water temperatures in some areas were 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over average.

This comes at the same time UNESCO experts are in Australia to determine if the coral reef, a World Heritage site, should be listed as "in danger."
