Watch live: House of Representatives continues vote for new speaker

Republicans are returning to the Capitol Wednesday evening to do what they couldn't do earlier in the day: elect a new House speaker. The situation has left Congress paralyzed, since no member of the House of Representatives can be sworn in and no rules can be adopted until a speaker is chosen.

GOP leader Kevin McCarthy failed to secure enough votes from his political party to win the gavel, denied the 218 votes he needed by a cadre of Republican hard-liners in three separate ballots. It was the first time in a century that a speaker was not elected on the first round.

A group of up to 20 conservatives is determined to oppose McCarthy, and the end game remains unclear. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan has emerged as a GOP rival, having drawn the complete support of the anti-McCarthy caucus. But he says he doesn't want the job and continues to support McCarthy.

  1. On the vote on the motion to adjourn, I don’t see why representatives are allowed to keep voting after the time remaining has reached zero. Polls are closed. If I showed up to vote in an election even a few minutes after the polls close, I’m confident I wouldn’t be allowed to vote. When the timer reached zero, it was 207 nays to 204 yeas. The motion shouldn’t have passed if the time limit was honored.

    1. Depending on your state if your standing online before the polling site closes they have to let you vote

    2. @ Carter & L.Diaz — THAT’S part of the problem! Nobody wants to ‘play by the rules’!
      –Election DAY
      –OPEN FROM XX:am
      –CLOSED AT XX:pm
      –IN – PERSON
      –VERIFY I.D.
      *DONE*

    1. @G Demolished but if we get someone in there that will investigate Biden and his family and deeply investigate the government and social media and also everything about Covid then at least we get something. And I believe getting answers to these subjects will bring the red wave in 2024 that was wanted this year

  2. It’s really easy and naive to blame our representatives when we elect them. I find them to be a very accurate reflection of our society.

  3. This is the best politics in my lifetime of 56 years! Do us a favor and continue these votes for the next two years!!!!!!!

    1. @Steven K. Sorry sir!! What Country are you from? Are your eyes closed? This Country has been destroyed for a long time!!!

  4. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

  5. Representatives paid $174k a year, $407 (est) per day x going on 3 days so what $200k plus a day …. Just our money. Elect someone and get to work!

  6. Re: The invocation. Her teachers had once advised her to skip the lecturing when you do the invocation. “yeahs & nays”: the nays had it in the 1st invocation, i mean after the ‘spiritual invocation’, just to distinguish them. In any case, i can understand why the clerk who has control of congress until a speaker is elected, us a bit rusty in this procedure. The last time this happened was 100 years ago. Interesting, seeing ‘the people’s business’ being carried out, but in a pro-forma-like way, because the Constitutionally specified election of Speaker is not yet determined.

  7. You would get more professionalism from 434 kindergarteners than you would with those so-called adults in the house.

  8. They should all be ashamed of themselves, toss them all out and start over in my opinion with quality middle class middle aged Americans with term limits.

  9. Lady said in prayer, “the light that shines from the dome above us” sound like what flat earth people say 🤷🏽‍♂️
