“If they can do it to tRump, they can do it to you” – – the difference is public office holders vs private citizens. And everyone ignores the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 – that requires extensive financial disclosures for elected officials – not private citizens.

And their spouses too then? If a sanitation worker files jointly with their spouse, their spouse’s return should also be public?
They say a potential precedent for forcing other politicians to release their tax returns is a bad thing. Why? In order for voters to have any inkling that their representatives in Congress are passing tax law that is in any way close to equitable, their tax returns need to be public. Consider it a cost of being a public servant. And also – why would anyone in Congress feel the need to hide their tax info unless revealing it could reveal potentially compromising information, and if that is so, why do we want that person in Congress in the first place?
Because Democrats would also have to do this.

Nothing wrong with seeing the tax returns of presidential candidates, SC justices or congressional members before election. It would go a long way to stopping a future Trump or Santos from running and embarrassing themselves and everyone around them.

Finland, Norway and Sweden publish everyone’s tax returns, every year. These three countries are also at the top of every index of “freedom”, transparancy , level of democracy , and quality of life. It is a mistake to say that the “tax system is broken”. It is doing precisely what it was designed to do.

You’re correct, and the benefit of this is that we all generally trust our government to do the right thing, and that’s why we agree on paying a higher % in taxes, because we know that it will be spent in a correct and responsible way. Our elected officials gets hung out in the news media and shamed if they for example according to public opinion has been traveling to and from work by taxi to frequent or are in any way wasting tax payers money so checks and balances benefits us all.

@Leo G It is not listed anywhere, but if you want to know what somebody earns and pays in taxes you can request documentation and get it sent to you by post or mail for a service fee. I think we also have a tax catalog each year one can order which list every single person. 1 for each “state”
@Leo G The more you earn, the more you pay. It’s like 30% in Sweden since it covers education and medical, and a part of it is set aside to collect rent and get payed out back as retirement pay. In Norway it’s about the same, but you pay a bit more every months, but in return you get the summer month in June and also winter month in Dec payed out tax free because it is the time of the year when they know people need some extra cash for vacation and christmas gifts and so on
