Asylum seekers left with few options after buses drop them off in New York City | USA TODAY

Asylum seekers bussed from the southwest to New York arrive with hope and a desire to work, but are often stuck in the city’s strained shelter system.

Since June, more than 20,000 asylum-seekers have arrived in New York City on buses from Texas and Arizona. Other buses have ferried migrants to Washington and Chicago. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis joined the fray briefly in September when he authorized flights of asylum-seekers from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, sparking widespread outcry.

Officials in Texas and Florida maintain that they only transport migrants who choose to reach those destinations. But after the buses roll away, asylum-seekers are left to navigate a foreign city without speaking the language, find a place to live with no relatives or sponsors to help them and feed themselves with no work lined up.

The result, in New York, means that thousands of those migrants end up in the city's homeless shelter system, already strained near capacity with thousands of New Yorkers who had lost jobs and homes during the coronavirus pandemic and a decades-old housing crisis, advocates said. As of Oct. 24, more than 63,000 people crowded the city's homeless shelter system – a new historic high. Last month, Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency to deal with the crisis and directed workers to erect large temporary tents to handle the overflow.

  1. Must be nice to arrive in a country illegally and be given a house money and free health care while one that been born here has to struggle working a low paying job just to survive

  2. need to mandate home owners to open up all extra bedrooms to these migrants! its our duty to make sure they are all well fed and have a roof over their heads and a warm comfortable bed to sleep in. anyone that doesnt allow migrants into their homes is INHUMANE!

    1. You feed them, but for you to demand hard working home owners are obligated to do all that is insane. I refuse to believe people like you actually exist this has to be a troll comment or fake account.

  3. I can’t even begin to imagine what these people are going through. My prayers are with them all.
Most of all, I pray for them and all of us, to make sure they are right with God through His Son Jesus Christ. We are all sinners, if you have ever lied you’ve sinned. The Bible states that the penalty of sin is death, meaning eternal death in Hell. But God loves us so much that He sent His beloved Son Jesus Christ to save us. Jesus took your sin upon himself, he went to the cross and died in your place, thereby paying your sin debt. Jesus was buried in a tomb and on the third day he rose to eternal life. Jesus Christ is alive! He defeated death, Satan and Hell! Jesus offers all that would trust in Him as their Lord and Savior victory over death, Satan and Hell. Please go to Jesus in prayer, let him know that you choose to trust him and follow him as your Lord and Savior..

    1. Pray for American homeless veterans. Pray for migrants who waited years and sacrificed everything they had to come to this country properly who this is a slap in the face too. Pray for border patrol and law enforcement who got demonized over the last two years while these criminals are made out to be victims. Don’t pray for people who plan to extort the US in every way they can and don’t plan on contributing. Don’t pray for drug dealers killing your kids with fentanyl.

  4. That same drive to get here needs to be used to make their own countries better. We fought to make country better and they have to do the same!!
Worst thing to see is a person who is willing to kill themselves to get away from their country but then wave their countries flag somewhere else 🤦‍♂️

  5. Continue watching this video turn down the volume and on another browser listen to the song “we are the world” by Michael Jackson. It may be the Feeling we are all looking for today. This could be a wise thing to do if you think the world is on a suicidal course ending all conscious life in the universe that we know today.

  6. these are not asylum seekers. if you disagree, look into what is actually considered asylum and then get back to me.

    1. Economic migrants, not Asylum seekers. If they don’t get their status and paperwork do you think that they will self deport? Hell no!!!! FJB
