Bolduan rolls the tape on city councilman’s racist remarks. Hear his response

CNN's Kate Bolduan talks to Los Angeles city council member Kevin de León, who is facing renewed scrutiny after a video surfaced online of him engaged in a physical altercation with a community activist during a holiday event. That came after audio leaked earlier this year in which he and other council members made racist comments about a fellow council member's Black child. #CNN #News

    1. He won’t leave, he’ll have to be removed. It’s clear he’s not going to respect the will of the people.

    1. @Andres Herrera Yet another clown that has no clue what “freedom of speech” in America actually means. Is that you, Elon?

    2. @Andres Herrera These people don’t believe in it. They think offensive words are more serious than actual crimes.

    3. @Andres Herrera Freedom of speech protects you from governmental punishment for your speech. Nobody is trying to prosecute him. The public just wants him to resign.

    1. It was a political hit job we know that in LA only the ultra liberal crazy’s just want to hear themselves scream

  1. Wow, this guy is a perfect reflection of the state of politicians today- he really thinks there is some greater good that he stands for, that somehow miraculously forgives unforgivable behaviour- No, you aren’t bigger than whatever problem you have created… and if de Leon is (as he says here) “the epicenter” of homelessness then he needs to move in with everyone on Skid Row… notice how he hops up and down in his chair as she asks a tough question at 4:00

    1. Not volunteering to this position, he is only there because the people behest of the people find out your a disrespectful POS then leave.

  2. This man just gave a masterclass in avoiding answering the questions in favor of spouting bored, overused political platitudes. “Roll up my sleeves”, “talk to constituents every single day” “out there doing the hard work of representing the American people”, blah blah blah, without actually saying one goddamn thing.

    1. @Michael Jefferson locker room talk in the recording that all ! What’s the big deal and y’all problem .🤣😄😃😂🇺🇸🇲🇽🇬🇹🇮🇹

    2. Just saying,
Why should he resign? His constituents just re elected him this past mid term. I live in LA,CA and it is time to move on.👍🏿

  3. He didn’t even answer the questions… instead he used it as a platform to justify his job. He is putting himself first, not the people. If you can’t respect people, you should not be in a leadership position.

    1. I wonder what’s in this CNN white woman anchor private locker room talk !🇺🇸🇲🇽🇮🇹🇬🇹

  4. Before she re-played the tape, he was about to explain about the context of what he said. After we all heard him on tape, he now wants to admit his remorse for saying it in the first place.
If the context will exonerate you, then you have no need to apologize.
People caught up in a verbal or written indiscretion always want to pull the “context” rabbit out of their hats when their mistakes are unequivocally revealed.

    1. @Anonymous Person it doesn’t if he’s a Democrat or not his power grab didn’t work its time for you to go Kevin and take that sorry attempt at an apology with you

  5. “This is not who I am” then who is it? Because this isn’t a one-off incident. It’s a pattern of behavior and those ARE who you are.

He’s not sorry, he’s sorry he was caught.

  6. Dude’s talking real soft here. He and the others on the tape had a lot more confidence in their words as they insulted their constituents. What happened, bro?

  7. If he didn’t have the courage to speak against or in counterpoint to what Nury Martinez and others were saying in that meeting, the very least he could have done is leave. However, that de León attended the meeting at all in the first place is problematic because it’s a highly dubious prospect that the ugly bigotry in that one meeting was unique to just that meeting. What was going on in that meeting reflected a culture and it’s just about as unlikely that Kevin de León didn’t know what he was involved in, presumably without speaking up in opposition. //Context: We live in the same neighborhood and LA City Council district, which he currently reps.

  8. I’d love to see more reporters go this hard at EVERY politician. Instead of letting them lie, show the damn videos, play the tapes, bring out the evidence and put it in their faces!

    1. @1080 00 OK bootlikka, it is not slander if it is 100% true, playing a recording of someone is in fact a form of investigative journalism, we should have it on the news we should have it in town hall meetings and we should have it in debates, every politician should be scrutinized for everything they do in their official capacity and held accountable at all times, including providing evidence so they cannot lie about it, didn’t your parents teach you anything?

    2. She let him off lightly…allowed
Him to change the subject and go on bragging about how much he’s done for the community and his constituents. She’s another political hack.

    3. @Jesse Nickerson We need more reporters like the ones on 60 Minutes Australia. They come with receipts and don’t play.

  9. So Kev, is this the only time you heard your colleagues speak like this and failed to denounce it? Let alone join in. A real profile in courage.

  10. You can’t say “that’s not who I am” when your on video and audio recorded showing exactly who you are…. The problem with Mr De Leon is that he’s not taking any accountability… if it were me I’d simply say, I am capable of being this way obviously, and i strive to do better but, I’d resign because clearly the struggle is too great for me to maintain a graceful balance to check myself, he’s not able to check himself at all! He needs to get out and make room for some new blood

  11. You can’t virtually erase the audio taped coversation with this reputation and integrity restoration tour Kevin. We all heard it. Sure, people make mistakes but elected public officials should be held to a higher standard. Resign and open up the seat to someone with hopefully higher standards than your own and willing to aspire to them.

  12. The anger and narcissism in this man is palpable. He is the kind of guy that is just on the edge of saying, “who do you think you are questioning me”
