Customers of Bed Bath and Beyond say they are shocked and disappointed at how quickly and suddenly it shut down all its stores.

  1. How many months has this slow bankruptcy been going on? You should never sit on any of those gift cards even if there is no bankruptcy rumour spreading.

  2. Part of the problem is an uninformed/unengaged consumer.

    A gift card is an unsecured callable loan to a business. You are the lender, and the business is the borrower. I don’t care how pretty the plastic card is. That is the reality.

    If you have a substantial amount of GCs with any business (which you don’t intend to use immediately), you should look into their financial health and make your best guess to see if they are a going concern.

  3. you can’t spend the money you have on the card, in the store because it has basically closed down now !
