Zookeepers stepped in to care for a newly-born Sumatran orangutan, the first orangutan birth at the Sacramento Zoo since 1981.

“After the birth of the infant, care staff began around-the-clock observations to be certain everything was going smoothly with the pair,” the zoo said in a Facebook post.

Sumatran orangutans are listed critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species due to illegal killings and high levels of habitat conversion and fragmentation.
