Jury selection began Monday in a trial that mashes up Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" with Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."

The heirs of Ed Townsend, Gaye's co-writer of the 1973 soul classic, sued Sheeran, alleging the English pop star's hit 2014 tune has "striking similarities" to "Let's Get It On" and "overt common elements" that violate their copyright.

  1. Interesting case in copyright law for sure but it would set a precedent that might kill songwriting. Why not just force songwriters who copy others in this way to make proper attributions? We can’t disallow creativity even if it’s very incremental.

  2. You know, this is not the first time Gaye’s family suing an artist for the same reasons, ugh, it’s a pattern and yeah, I agree, all they want is money! Lmao!!

  3. They are going to ravage Sheerans pockets for using a simple basic chord on his song. Get the KY ready Eddie. 😂

  4. Counter sue those liars. No you want free money because you spent out your fathers money. People should be protesting denouncing Marvin gay. Let the courts know she’s a pauper and think the people wants her fathers old music which most don’t like. He couldn’t make it. Now you can see she got free money before and thinks she’s going to keep on doing this. Counter sue her for all the money she doesn’t have for wasting your time Ed.

  5. Typical. They’re trying to stay relevant and get paid.
    Nobody owns a chord progression.
    NOBODY.
Who used that progression before Marvin’s writer?
    They should sue back.
