FBI joins probe into ‘intentional’ attacks on substations

With no suspects or motive announced, the FBI is joining the investigation into power outages in a North Carolina county believed to have been caused by “intentional” and “targeted” attacks on substations that left around 40,000 customers in the dark Saturday night, prompting a curfew and emergency declaration. #CNN #News

  1. How can they justify not having surveillance at power sub stations that are critical for tens of thousands to survive? That is completely ignorant.

    1. @Jil Pok Wouldn’t it be less expensive to catch and deal with the perps and their friends that want to overthrow the government?

    2. @cyberash3000 Are the fences solid? Cause a chain link fence would have no effect on a bullet. That could be shot from outside the fence itself. So I would call into question you conclusion,if that is the case. Cheers!

    1. I’m guessing that sheriff’s going to be associated with quite a few of the criminals….

    2. I’m thinking they may never be caught unless they start mouthing off bragging about it . Or if some camera caught a vehicle going on that road . Let’s hope get get caught .

    3. I doubt it. Barney Fife the Sheriff doesn’t look to bright, and most likely attends the same meetings as the perps

  2. When i did private security for a Kentucky coal mine co. They only hired me during the deer hunting season to watch a middle of nowhere substation from hunter damages ,but that was smaller and its main purpose was power to the deep mine for fans air lights ect, power companies only care to pay workers to cut off homes when they’re too poor ,usually the coldest month too.

    1. It looks like they were probably firing for at least 30 minutes to shoot out each substation. So having security 24/7 year round would have been far less costly than the $15M that it is costing them now.

    2. That’s interesting, I wonder if their just being assholes or going off economics of poor people because they thinking poor ppl waste energy. Curious case

    3. @Denton A na… it’s nothing like that. It’s drunk people with guns. It’s quite scary that they feel compelled to shoot at substations without considering the devastation they will do to other people for absolutely no reason other than being drunk and reckless. In this case it appears to be more deliberate than simply being drunk since apparently they knew of the location of two substations and knew how and where to shoot in order to beak them.

    4. @Denton A ??? I just said “in this case…”. Drunk people with guns come up with geniusly criminal ideas. I was referring to the people shooting at the coal substation during dear season. However, in this case, being that they shot up two separate substations, it is unlikely to attribute this to the genius of armed drunkenness. (I use the word ‘genius’, because the opposite word is censored)

  3. Now when will everyone realize that is involved with the electric grid of the United States how vulnerable it is if someone can just randomly do damage to it what if it was a terror act from terrorist I agree with the person that made the comment when are they going to have surveillance this is an important facet I really think it should be protected upgraded protected just like our water source our food source

    1. Looks like some of you people on the other side of the aisle are in a bit of a panic. You know if a civil war ever starts there won’t be any electricity, you’ll be getting your water out of a bucket you collected rainwater in and your lighting will be nothing more than a candle, that’s if your smart enough to have one. While you people panic the rest of us watch an amusement.

    2. There hasn’t been an attack like this. The stations are surrounded by fence and barbed wire and heavily signed. The cost of the multiple cameras and the monitor service would be a huge fee and most of these are in rural areas. That added cost unless subsidized would go to customers.

    4. @dan ven oh I’m smart enough my people you don’t know who I am you don’t even know who my people are

  4. The same thing happened 10 or 20 years ago. At that time there was a lot of talk about testing the infrastructure for possible future attacks. Hopefully this is just a ragtag group of idiots causing trouble, and not America’s enemies.

  5. I was always puzzled why terrorists would plan a grand terrorist stunt like 9/11, when they could do so much more damage if they went after key infrastructure. Roads, railroads, power, communications. All that stuff is minimally guarded and vital to society.

    1. The scariest conversation I ever had was shortly after 9/11, when I had a conversation with a group of other engineers about how we’d hurt the nation without the sort of violence and mass civilian deaths of 9/11. A lot of it revolved around taking out critical infrastructure in the power, food, and financial systems.

    2. Because the media spoon fed you fear over “war on terror” to make $$$ for Military industrial complex. Islamic terrorism was never as big an issue as media put it. Notice how they never talk about it anymore??? Also, The USaa creates e terrorists, by arming the Mujahadeen, and ISIS in Syria.

    3. @mfonker 9/11 was a means to erode our civil liberties and kill 1 million Iraqis over BS claims, enrich the MIC and try to dominate the world. It failed disastrously for the neocons but we all pay the price of less freedoms and eroded rights. The western corporate media is lying to you.

    2. Almost all infrastructure is vulnerable to terrorist attacks because almost all such infrastructure is out in the open. There are something like 600,000 bridges in the USA so how do you protect all of them — the answer is that it is absolutely imposable. There are about 200,000 miles of high voltage transmission lines in the USA and, like bridges, you can’t protect all of that or even a tiny portion of it. Add in dams and many other critical items and, well, there is nothing we can do to fully protect them…

  6. While you’re looking into this act of terrorism, you need to have the national guard on standby for the victims. First, people are going to freeze to death and there aren’t enough shelters in the county for over 40k people. Second, opportunists are going to be scouring for the vulnerable to rob and loot. Please do more to help them.

    1. @sonicpsycho13 Actually, the highs for this week in Moore County, NC, are forecasted to be in the 60s & 70s, with lows in the 40s. Typically, the coldest months in the region are January & February, but even those are fairly mild.

    2. @Margaret Dimick I can look up the weather on the internet.

Regardless, 40 is still cold and very uncomfortable. That’s why some will try to burn gas or charcoal indoors for heat. I was pointing out that these power outages cause spikes in carbon monoxide poisonings and even house fires because of people trying to keep warm.

    3. @Valleri Thomas if I wanted to know the weather in Central NC, I’d just walk outside, been living here for past 12 years.

    4. robbing and looting is democrat definition of peaceful protest and already seen straight out of democrat nazi expected behavior

    5. Who cares? No. Carolina citizens voted for this by electing Youngkin. Let the NC parents take personal responsibility for the terrorism: After all, “God helps those who help themselves”. Cackle, cackle, cackle. You must reap what you sow. Suck it up right wingers. It’s only your freedumb come to haunt you.

  7. Committing acts of violence for political or religious beliefs or to force your religious or political beliefs on somebody isn’t that the very definition of terrorism in the first

    1. yet cnn still defines biden’s nazi brownshirt blm/anitfa terrorists burning, looting and murdering innocents as “peaceful protest” while democrat promoted the exact same evil as hitlers brownshirts did. cnn is still blaming russian disinfo even when such is STILL A PROVEN LIE by democrat nazi propaganda for hunter’s laptop HAVING PROVED the democrat corruption to the core of the current democrat nazi administration of evil

  8. When they catch this person or people who did this. I’d hate to see how much restitution they will have pay.

    1. @Belly Dancer Em …..or cut to a car chase in Los Angeles. Thats Uncle Sean’s go to when the facts dont line up w the alternate facts

    2. It’s Democrats that want to depopulate. Abortion, homosexuality, starvation from idiotic farming policies, eliminating fuel.

    3. why when democrats are already on record years ago calling such as “peaceful protest” when biden’s nazi brownshirt blm/antifa terrorists burnt, looted and murdered innocents to honor democrat hero hitler by duplication the same evil as hitler’s brownshirts did in peaceful protest in the 1930’s

  9. Imagine if this starts happening across the country, it honestly won’t take much to shut down the entire country’s grid

    2. @Piccalilli Pit If civilization collapses to the extent you are fearing, you wouldn’t want to live there. And if you manage to survive you life span is limited to the next person you meet.

    3. @Tenacious Dmitchell speaking of that…things don’t really add up here considering the fact that everything was professionally thought out, and where the heck is the footage of the incident, I thought that substations have mobile surveillance cameras including thermal vision and motion detection systems that are directly linked to lights and sirens…..taking that to mind, I truly don’t think they’d need guards. But it also brings up other questions doesn’t it?

  10. These kind of things will never stop. But when you get your light bill, you will know who is paying for the repairs

  11. I think it was a test run to see how and what the response would be in preparation for the real thing, y’all be safe out there

  12. This can’t be random, you have to understand how power infrastructure works. With everything going on in the world, I hope this is a one off! Because if it becomes a trend… Domestic or Foreign this is terrorism.

    1. Do you know where Moore county is? I think it is the middle of nowhere! I rent property there and choose to live out of state. Kids!

  13. This is beyond unacceptable. The behavior, obviously, but I mean the fact that domestic security seems to be able to forewarn about these attacks with considerable intellegence, and yet none of these attacks are prevented. This is going back as far as Charlottesville or even before. State and local police receive the information.

    1. It’s the Right Wingers. They absolutely hate America, man. If they can’t have it all to themselves, they’re quite happy with destroying it. You know, like the Nazis did with Germany. There wasn’t a lot left by the time the Nazis got rooted out.

  14. Considering a MAGA deliberately wasted law enforcement time by tweeting “I know who did this” and when they showed up responded with “gOd wOrKs iN mySTeRioUs waYs” and proselytized at them about drag shows, I think we have some idea.
Especially since they’ve been posting threats.

    1. Emily Gainey? is the lead maga goober on this one. J6-biblenut. Yallquaeda will shoot their own eye out. 🙄

    3. @denise starr magats and qnuts. constantly threatening if nothing else specific a general civil war if they don’t get their way.

  15. Let’s hope they get to the bottom of this soon and find those accountable. Need to look out for people and your neighbors especially the elderly they could lose lives from this.
