Firefighters battle a large blaze in a building under construction | USA TODAY

Firefighters were on the scene as black smoke and flames engulfed a building under construction in a suburb of Charlotte, NC.

Crews were battling a four-alarm fire and at least one rescue operation was reported after a large blaze broke out Thursday morning in Charlotte, North Carolina, first responders said.

The Charlotte Fire Department reported it responded to a structure fire call before 10 a.m. ET in the city's SouthPark neighborhood. About 10:30 a.m., the department tweeted it was on scene of the four-alarm fire on Liberty Row Drive and was asking people to avoid the area.

The area is about six miles south of downtown Charlotte.

  1. Should be illegal to build these big apartment buildings out of wood!!

    How long will it be before one of these building burn after they are occupied and people are killed?

    Buildings of this size should be built of brick, cement and steel.
