Strangers worked together to save a dog that had fallen into a canal by dangling over a wall and pulling him up.

Batu Akyol's stroll along the Ancoats Canal became a fight for survival when his dog, Sumak, fell into the muddy water. The canal walls are so steep that there was no chance for the dog to scramble out by himself, which left Akyol desperately keeping him afloat by his leash.

As the frantic owner fought to haul him up, students Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor, who were walking home from a local coffee shop, spotted the drama and leaped into action. As they struggled, they were soon joined by a crowd of passers-by.
