Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck dies at 78 from meningitis | USA TODAY

Jeff Beck, from the English rock band The Yardbirds, won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Jeff Beck, legendary guitarist from English rock band The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group, has died at 78.

The news was announced Wednesday on Beck's verified Twitter account.

"On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing," a statement provided to USA TODAY said, which noted that the musician died Tuesday "after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis."

  1. Saw him in 81 at the Greek Theatre here in So Cal. He was sipping on a Beck’s beer during the show…Last of the electric innovators. Charlie Christian, Hendrix, Van Halen, Beck..RIP

  2. Saw him back in the day in Cleveland OH promoting his album Blow by Blow. Phenomenal player and one of my all time favorites. RiP
