Jackson, MS Mayor: The ‘Situation Is Dire’ In My City | Hallie Jackson | MSNBC

The Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, Chokwe Lumumba, joins Ayman Mohyeldin as cases of COVID-19 spike across the city. Jackson cites "political pressure" on the state's Governor as the reason for the state's reopening, which he says ultimately led to an increase in cases. Aired on 08/03/2020.

  1. What America needs is nationwide broadband that goes everywhere. This is one thing the Government can do! This is the 21st century … let’s step into it!

    1. @TheRealHiesenberg ohh there WAS a recording… how convenient to make a claim without proof. iF THERE IS A RECORDING THEN PRODUCE IT… other wise your claim is just more lies

    2. @Fanta Graham There are communities that got broadband because they welcomed in small companies to set it up. Unfortunately, I live in an area that turned down everything on offer for community development under the Obama Admin and allowed existing provider to avoid upgrades while keeping the price so high most people can’t afford internet at all. We also only have one cell provider with reliable service. And you guessed it-expensive. We don’t have socialism or capitalism. We’ve got third world trumpism.

    3. High speed internet is part of infrastructure, and if people care to VOTE in November we can put people back to work with smart projects like that (in addition to repairing roads and bridges). The coal jobs aren’t coming back, sorry to break it to you.

    4. @Paul Wilson Mitch is on record calling himself “the grim reaper” and swearing that no legislation will get past him that he doesn’t like. – that means almost everything – this is pretty well known, I’m surprised you didn’t hear about it. BTW “otherwise” is one word, mmKay ?

    5. Fanta Graham Trump administration created an emergency outlet to announce when our country is threatened. That is very troubling . Would you want to hear Trump 24-7 on every phone,tv or radio. Authoritarians do that and something like that Trump would use in his final desperate hours before the election. No thanks .

  2. Why is My Teacher Friend that supports a child with special needs, being Forced to go to School Today in Terry Mississippi?
    #Mississippi

    1. @Troll Buster Once again YOU know nothing about our military or national guard! WUSSIE!!!!!!

    2. @Eric Swartzmiller perhaps he’ll build some factories and get his publicity merchandise made in the USA instead of China. Maybe someone could put that idea to him?

    3. My friend updated me this evening and she said that she would teach some students daily, both in class and via zoom.
All children will eat in the room and not the cafeteria, and each day a new group of teens will rotate in and replace students from the day before, so like produce that’s handled by many people, the teachers, that are also responsible for cleaning each desk with no extra or hazard pay, are exposed to a new batch of germ transport devices that have interacted with many individually outside of school, and more interrelated interactions will make any delayed positive results fun to trace.

They’ll take temperatures and any student displaying symptoms will be sent to the nurse and then home.

That sounds like a disastrous plan, but it is Mississippi.

    1. @snowflake killer murkdog is an oligarch having an monopolistic media empire on three continents, reactionary fascist ridiculing sciences blaming and hating the food ignorance thrives on. Even his mother, Elizabeth, didn’t like his politics at all and now James had enough

    1. LMAO, Now the skewed numbers we all know of are being looked at. MSM Doom & Gloom! DIRE SITUATION: 1700 died is not DIRE, it is sad and it is probably dropping due to new treatment. Some 792 died from the FLU. 15,000 in Mississippi died from heart disease & cancer. That is is getting somewhat dire, but, oddly no media coverage hmm? Question is how many will die un-intended NON_COVID? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/07/29/lockdown-has-killed-21000-people-say-experts/ Maybe the high risk should lockdown and the rest of America can get on with life. This cannot continue!

    2. @Stephen David Bailey Test results and ballots from blue states will be kept in That vault along with his tax returns and `phone transcripts

  3. Trump: “We have the most positive cases in the world, but the media keep painting it in a negative light. Not fair!”

    1. Almost every one under 70 years old that dies from this FLU, is OBESE and/or has Diabetes! Maybe they should stop eating McDonalds Burger& fries and get to exercising. People losing their Livelyhoods to protect FAT people is wrong!

    2. @Pam Deshane Without even a trace of irony the Trumpanzee whines about letting fat over 70’s who eat McD’s burger n fries costing people their livelihoods and intimates they should be left to die. Blindly, she plays her part as a Conservative culture warrior, trying desperately to defend the indefensible and her vote against her own interests, like a particular variant of Stockholm Syndrome peculiar to cultists.
(N.B.- she capitalises ” livelihoods” and spells it incorrectly and also capitalises “diabetes” and “burger” for no reason — Does she know, but does this in homage to Mad King Donald of Bonespurs ? I don’t usually care but it seems interesting that a lot of Trump fans have this foible and I really wonder if it’s an affectation they do on purpose – Hmm ) I think I will call this “Political Stockholm Syndrome aggravated by exposure to constant govt propaganda” (Faux “news”) with the capitalisation and poor spelling “thing” perhaps being a symptom ? ; ) lol sarc

    1. Head damage AND organ damage. IF the repubs destroy the ACA who’s going to cover pre-existing conditions?

  4. The Trump administration has totally failed the country on a national plan for testing, contact tracing and procuring needed supplies and equipment by invoking the Defense Production Act. If the allegations are true in the 7/30/20 article in Vanity Fair about Jared Kushner’s test plan going “poof into thin area” for political reasons to punish blue states, the Trump administration must be held accountable.

    1. @real american been living under a rock? Asymptomatic, means you have it and you are spreading it but don’t know it. Without testing you don’t know you are recklessly spreading. And you have to contact trace. Like the successful countries. A centuries old idea that works but your govt did not do. You trace back to find out others that were in contact and try to find the sick ones. Helps the economy because you get things under control and only quarantine small groups or locations for a couple of weeks. Really. Pay attention. Not that hard unless your last name is trump.

  5. We don’t get well till Biden and — science based — leadership is the rule not the exception. Register on line EARLY, MAIL BALLOTS EARLY. Trump’s UNDERFUNDED crippling the Post Office and complaining about “rigged” elections is kicking you in the teeth and shooting you for mumbling. Register on line EARLY, MAIL BALLOTS EARLY and “flatten the curve” voting this
NOVEMBER by VOTING AS EARLY AS YOU CAN!!!

    1. @Ali B You have my permission, and if you wish to add to it like a wikipedia edit, that’s okay too.

    2. @Big Ern Mahkracken
If Trump resigned Republicans could choose a new candidate, so if enough people in the GOP were overly concerned about Biden eliminating suburbs, guns, religion, the police, borders and teaching communism in schools, I don’t think they would still be keeping their kneepads handy.

    3. @Nancy M Ross I don’t believe you . Let’s pretend he shared his plan to stop the China virus. Must not of been much of a plan as no one has implemented it or is talking about it.

  6. It’s too bad that we don’t have a president to help.Americans need to start filing class action lawsuits against the state for their negligence.

    1. Look at this guys house though. Just checked he gets paid $120,000 year. For what exactly? 90 might a more reasonable amount especially considering all most mayors do is oppose Trump.

    2. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU NEEDS TO TAKE A CIVICS COURSE TO LEARN HOW AMERICAN GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY WORKS, INCLUDING OP. No one is filing class action lawsuits against states for negligence, smh. That’s not a thing; the lawsuit would be barred under several American legal doctrines. If you are unhappy with this administration’s gross mishandling of the pandemic, VOTE!

    3. @William IV What about me when I said this guy getting paid $120,000 a year is too much especially considering all mayors do is oppose Trump. Oppose Trump without the peoples consent. Nobody told the NYC mayor to do any of the things he did and where has the missing 1 billion dollars gone???? It’s a rhetorical question because I know he’s stolen it.

    4. GasoLINA INK! Yes. You need to take a civics course. The way you discuss how the executive power of the mayor works is ignorant. It is clear that you do not understand the interplay between city, county, state, and federal government entities.

  7. The Trump cronies seem to be focussing on covering up the information, just like in the United Kingdom.
This leaves local authorities unable to adequately respond, which will lead to more deaths, lockdowns and an ongoing crisis in the hospitals and morgues.
Shoot the messenger seems to be the default reaction of many authoritarians, instead of showing leadership and really solving the problems.

    1. @T. R. Campbell “Africa is being decimated by COVID-19″… it is? according to the stats the entire continent of africa saw 330 deaths yesterday… and thats with a combined population of 1.5 billion people….

    2. Not like U.K. but more like a third world country or a country like China, North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, russia, all the despot country in the world. These turd politicians think this is American and how the country should b run.

    3. Paul Wilson Indeed it is. Deaths in South Africa alone exceed 8000. Deaths in Egypt exceed 4000. Deaths in Algeria exceed 1000. Nigeria reported 888 deaths. I’m not gonna waste my time reporting all the other African country. cases but there is a lot of them. South Africa alone is reporting 503,090 confirm COVID-19 cases. Egypt is confirming 94,316.

    4. Pam Dershane you absolute twit. It’s litterally not anything comparable to a flu. The cdc have a estimate for the 2017-2018 flu season deaths and it was 12000 at the low end and about 61000 using some more liberal methods of counting. Covids at over 150k now and we haven’t even hit flu season yet. By the time this things over 2-3 hundred thousand Americans will be dead. Many times more then a flu season takes and yet twits like you will still be around using laughably false articles like that bs piece you linked to, in order to try and seem like you have some understanding of the situation. But in reality you believe whatever the orange man tells you too believe and find articles like that solely to justify your belief, not because your actually trying to understand anything. This particular view of the virus is very sad to see because your litterally trying to dehumanize the victims of the pandemic. Saying that we shouldn’t care to much about their deaths because a similar amount of people die from heart disease, which is completely unrelated from covid. So sad maga drones will do anything these days, even try to normalize the needless loss of human life we’re seeing. Just to make orange man look better. I would seriously take a look at your ethical beliefs

    5. @eva camille thoroughman It gets upsetting watching people, you know, lose everything due to lock downs. Hope they don’t commit suicide over it, like a lot of people are doing! The economy needs to fully re-open, the un-intended consequences outweigh CV19! These democrats letting this happen will never get another vote!

    1. Actually the opposite is happening. Because state employees are almost all democrats they are padding the numbers.

    2. @CJ Otoniel The virus is not an accident. It was brought to you by the congressmen and senators who have been stealing us blind and they got caught. The 1.8 billion Obama sent to Iran in cash didn’t go to Iran. It went to our politicians. The NSA tracked the money all the way back to their accounts here in the states. They either have to get rid of Trump or spend the rest of their lives in prison. They never thought she would lose! The virus is about the election. More casualties means more democratic votes.

  8. Well put Sir Mayor. Without accurate information, none of us know the full scope of this pandemic.
    Just how tRump wants it.
    NOVEMBER!!!

  9. “My authority is total and I take no responsibility at all” – words muttered by an EPIC FAILURE who REFUSES to WORK for the American People.

  10. Republicans: “Democracy is great…just so long as we can subvert it to gain power and maintain our minority fascist rule!”

  11. Toxic Trump and Congressional Republicans are killing us!
    This isn’t political–it’s *_PERSONAL!!!_*
