  1. Meanwhile, I STILL can’t get a test quickly in my ED. When we admit someone we suspect with COVID-19, they are admitted as PUI ( Patient under investigation) . It still takes days to confirm . The numbers of admitted patients with COVID-19 in our S.C. hospital have been under reported that way since the start. The tests are also not perfect (no test is). But, when patients die without testing or with the very common false negative test they are not counted in the state numbers. We can say for sure this is not uncommon. We see patients who have several tests that are negative before a positive test finally results while in the hospital. Unfortunately, retesting when there are fewer tests than are needed is detrimental to the community. Using the limited testing resources on those we know have it, just to get them counted. This will leave others in the community spreading to others that should be in quarantine. We also usually don’t “waste” a test postmortem. Often, these will be labeled cardiac arrest, heart attack or in many cases respiratory arrest. In these cases, believe it or not, if a chest X-ray is done before they die and there are signs of pneumonia they will be officially counted as influenza and pneumonia without a positive COVID-19 test (that is a whole other rant). I have been in tertiary referral ED for over 15 years. We are getting pretty good at knowing what the sick COVID-19 patients look like. There is no other disease we have seen like this. I am not talking about the 95% of the people that do not get sick at all or have a range of mild to bad “stomach bug” , mild to bad “cold” , flu like illness, or “this cough that just won’t go away”. It causes all of those. It is difficult to guess them without a test, but they usually get better. I am talking about the ones who are going to die. If they don’t die, they are in for a rough ride. It has so many ways to kill you that it is scary. The disease itself causes a varying combination of respiratory failure, massive clotting of blood [leading to pulmonary embolism (blocks blood flow to lungs), stroke, heart attack], cardiac instability leading to cardiac arrest . And, this is likely just the common ones and we will continue to find more. As one ER doctor, I have seen at least two COVID-19 deaths and heard of many others from partners that will not show up in the official totals. So, as we are starting to hear more and more from the NOT FAKE NEWS that the numbers are wrong, I can tell you from first hand experience they are right. But, not in the direction they and the White House are pushing on their followers and the rest of the country. Of course, as has been the common lie, it is exactly the opposite. I could go on, but most likely, no one will read this anyway.

    1. Mohawk Nation normally I would totally agree. I am sure you get this already but, their bad decisions make it impossible to keep this in check. For instance. Just the simple thing of everyone wearing a mask in public places would save thousands. But at this point in the US, that will not happen. So, stupid doesn’t kill stupid in this case. It just kills.

    2. The world will have to live with this, just like the flu. We tested much more then any other country, so we have more confirmed cases. It’s possible when this is over, the actual death rate is much lower. However, so many cases equals so many deaths.

      whether they have done enough testing in any particular state. Don’t matter if it’s a Republican or Democrat run state. So governors on both sides of the aisle are in on this agenda not just the GOP. Public school nationwide will reopen in the Fall.

      How do I know this? It’s because from the start of this pandemic, Bill
      Gates said to shut down the nation for 6 to 10 weeks then reopen the economy by the end of May 2020 and open public schools in the Fall. Thus, all governors will blindly reopen their governments because there are no guidelines in place. Trump will continue to pressure all governors to reopen just as he recently pressured the governor of Virginia, the only state with a stay-at-home order that extends beyond May, to comply. While this is still a theory, time will tell.

    1. In some cases that may be the plan. Employers open up even for a short time. The employees that don’t return as some won’t right away will be fired reducing the number of unemployed. Thus reducing their unemployment insurance premiums. Nice Huh?

    2. Debbie Partir here’s the deal in Michigan , we were asked to shelter in place for two weeks to “buy time for the hospitals” the hospitals are not overwhelmed and it’s day 63 . The paycheck protection plan I received is only good for two months payroll, now my guys are applying for unemployment benefits. I hope they come back when we get on our feet again they are good family men !

    3. I don’t think they’ll get that many customers, and as soon as someone gets the virus, they won’t get any customers. You should stay out as long as you can. Call your state Representative and ask if there’s a law protecting you from losing your job for quarantining. If we would have had testing right off the bat, and contact tracing right off the bat, we wouldn’t be in this dire ‘between a rock and a hard place’ economic situation. There was a pandemic task force ready to implement a plan, but Trump’s administration did away with it. So here we are in a situation where most of us already know someone who has or had the virus, and eventually we’re all going to get it. Because of tremendous absence of leadership and horribly botched response. It’s ongoing. tRump is doing the exact same thing that got us into trouble in the first place.

  9. In order for there to be a “second wave” the “first wave” has to dip. There won’t be a second wave anytime soon because we’re still riding high on the crest of the first wave.
    The wave metaphor needs to be exchanged for something else because our government has failed so horribly that we never hit a trough. Imagine having a government so bad that you can’t properly use this metaphor for an infectious disease.

    2. @jdslyman well yes the pandemic was declared in 1918 but its not a fact.The exact origin of the Spanish flu, in late 1917 or early 1918, is still debated. … Barry wrote in his book, “The Great Influenza” and the “Journal of Translational Medicine,” the first known cases were probably in Haskell County, Kansas in 1917. From here in southwest Kansas it could have spread to Fort Riley.

  19. I love how the left uses “science” as a political tool, yet when real science is used to disprove them we are called science deniers. Please tell me what the scientific method is. Is it a computer model that was millions of deaths off, is science a computer model that claims the earth is warming then when its actually viewed to not be warming so called scientists fudge collected data to make it seem like the model wasn’t wrong? Isn’t real science when a hypothesis is made then a test performed to determine whether the hypothesis is right or not? Doesn’t the test need to be accurate and repeatable? Stop being idiots learn what science is and isn’t before spouting off like morons. No wonder cnn is called fake news
