Lana Payne elected Unifor president | “Workers need unions”

Lana Payne has been elected as the new national president for Unifor.

Payne was previously the union's national secretary-treasurer, and will be the first woman to lead Canada's largest private sector union.

  1. If you want to help workers, lower the corporate tax rate so the our employers have something to bargain with.

    1. Union participation has a direct measurable influence on wages. More Union members higher wages. Less union members lower wages. This fact applies to non-unionized workers as well. Everybody’s wage goes up the more workers are in unions. Math is pretty handy actually.

  2. No. Workers need “effective” unions.
    In my experience, unions exists to collect dues and ignore their members unless haranged mercilessly. Even then they do as little as possible of benefit.

    2. @Tâpwê I agree that there are unions that actually work hard to help their members.
      I also know that there are many unions that do not and have no intentions to do so.
      I belonged to one and, technically, still do.
      The issue is that there are far more of those than of the former that are of no benefit except to extract a percentage of your hard earned wages on payday.
      I’m not anti-union. They can work if there is a will to make it so.
