On the Front Lines of the Western Water Wars

Despite recent rainstorms in California, the decades-long megadrought in the West shows no signs of easing. As a result, some states have been forced to pull back on the water they use from the Colorado River. In this episode, we hear the story of one Arizona community forced to take legal action against the city of Scottsdale after being cut off from its water supply – and why it could serve as a warning to the rest of the country as the climate crisis continues.

  2. Group: we choose to live outside of the city so that we are not required to contribute to the other residents.
Group (also): hey! What do you mean we can’t have your water?

    1. Cedric appears to be shocked that journalists report on what’s happening. Your first day facing News here in Earth, Cedric?

  3. You’re doing great being stewards of the environment California. The other states should definitely follow your move.

  4. Maybe too many people prayed to their gods for rain and THEY ALL answered at once? Srsly tho, selling the rights to fresh water sources to companies like Nestle etc. was the first mistake.

  5. Southern California is draining the Central Valley and every river flowing out of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

  6. It’s very unfortunate. The shifting global climate means that we in Ireland are actually getting even more rain – not something we were short of to begin with. Building all those golf courses, and letting people water mansion gardens etc, always seemed like a recipe for disaster – a sure fire way to drain natural water tables which had taken millennia to accumulate in just a few decades. Add to that all the massive amounts of people who want to live in California, and along the coast, and their water needs are eventually going to hit a brick wall. Then what? Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer.

  7. The best part about climate change is that you don’t have to believe in the science to die from it. That’s the best part about Covid too TBH.

  8. 11:00 imagine arriving in Arizona and thinking “Yep, perfect for water intensive farming.”

A child could tell you that it’s not ideal.

  10. Short answer solution… Don’t build homes or farm in deserts. Eventually there will be too much constructed, and demand will outstrip supply so there won’t be enough water!! This is not an unforeseen tragedy. It’s predictable. So I would never buy a home in a dessert with 360 sunny, rain less days… because I would need for that rain in the area to accumulate water in lakes / reservoirs / ground wells, etc. to be able to live!! Same thing goes for flimsy home construction in common hurricane, tornado, or earthquake areas!

  11. *The progressives overpopulated the western states in search of sunshine and warm weather stretching water resources to the limit! So much for being concerned about the environment!*
