Potential breakthrough: New treatment for Alzheimer’s

  1. My dad passed away in April from Alzheimer’s. It’s a terminal disease so all you can do is watch your loved one fade away. Any advancements in this area are very welcome, no matter how small. Kudos to the researchers!

    1. “Jackie? Where’s Jackie?”- Quid Pro Joe TaliBiden looking for Jackie Walorski (who died in August) in the crowd.

  2. I didn’t hear about β€œimproving cognition” I heard about β€œslowing deterioration”—not the same. This doesn’t β€œfix things”—so it’s only for *prevention* of decline.
They are sort of mixing the conclusions up a bit…

    1. A lot of cancer treatments have a similar effect in this regard; they slow the progression of the cancer so a person is just eaten away from the inside more slowly. Cancer kills when it begins to impede organ system functions (breathing, expelling waste, digestion/absorption of nutrients). There are quite a few cognitive decline/deterioration disorders, Alzheimer’s is one among them.

    2. Well most people will get alzheimers within their last few decades of life so slowing it substantially could mean the difference between living those last years like a human or a vegetable which is a big difference

    3. And previous studies, on the same MAb, have shown it doesn’t even significantly slow progression. I think all this “good news” is due to Eisai promoting a cost/benefit analysis, claiming it can keep people out of long term care, and save money. But, that is based upon the proposal that it works, when other studies show it does not.

  3. I lost my granny (age 89) in Nov 2019. Too late for her. I lost my other granny (Liver cancer killed her, but she had early stage Alzheimers as well) in 2012. Too late for her too.

  4. My grandmother participated in studies in the ’90s… thanks to all who understand how important it is for these studies.

  5. This is good news for so many with alzheimers. It doesn’t help my mother- or father-in-law but perhaps it is going to help many others.

  6. I watched my mother’s decline from dementia. Very sad! I see some of the same early signs with Joe Biden. At times, he’s lucid. But at other times he shows irrational anger, the slurring of words and speaking fast almost stumbling over his words. Surely his wife sees this! I hope he lasts another two years.
