Senate to vote on a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade

Senate Democrats will vote on Wednesday on a bill that would make Roe v. Wade the law of the land and head off a Supreme Court decision that could leave states the sole authority on whether to restrict abortion.

The decision to move swiftly on legislation follows the leak of a draft opinion from the Supreme Court Tuesday that suggests the nation's highest court will overturn the landmark case that guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion.

The bill – introduced by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., late Tuesday evening – does not have the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster in the 50-50 Senate, but marks Democrats' first legislative attempt to enshrine the right to abortion into law since the leak.

  1. uh bud, the problem with the senate tacking action is if the supreme court says so, it goes <__<

    1. Including falsely testifying supreme court judges! No one should have life time position unless it’s volunteers.

    2. @Janet Pope by that logic, Trump should have a lifetime position as president as he didn’t take a salary…

    1. @Dangerwhisk there is though. It’s been a law since the 60s. Your just to stubborn and conservative to notice.

    2. @Dangerwhisk The fourteenth amendment applies to the right to privacy which also works for abortions. Look it up.

    3. @Devon Krishnaswami devon! thank you for advocating for womens rights 🙂

  2. State sovereignty! Reduce federal overreach! If you want to codify women’s rights, then clarify them, and amend the constitution! Roe was a loose interpretation of the right to privacy!

  3. Hey Schumer what’s a woman? You’ve said it 15 times but bet you can’t define it

    1. @Aron Apostolis So predominantly who voted against the violence against women act, universal healthcare and legalization of MJ?🤔

    1. @Vault Thirteen I’m sorry if I sounded too strongly about it..politics suck to begin with and I’m just scared of what’s gonna happen if this is overturned..like if they kept it and the states decided then individually what’s appropriate I won’t argue with that..I just don’t want them to shut down the opportunity to make it better

    3. @Doodlegem Emera fear is of the enemy, and worry is a sin.

i know that the political divide has been getting out of hand recently, but understand that you’re an American. you have the power. the government works for you, not the other way around. i’d encourage you to take a break from the bombastic headlines and comment threads and spend some time doing something you enjoy. take a deep breath and realize that you are the one in control of your life and your choices, not the government. i don’t know you from Adam, but i can tell you’re quite empathetic. just remember to take care of yourself so you can better care for those around you–because family/community is what gets us through the hard times, not the government or anyone else.

even if an abortion ban does come to your state, you can rally other like-minded individuals to make actual change, and it will be easier than if you were trying to sway the entirety of the federal government. and even if politics arent your thing, you can still move to another state, one that better aligns with your political beliefs and is filled with like-minded individuals. that’s the beauty of a constitutional republic. but before all the politics and debates and the people trying to save the whole world, remember that you’re the only one that can save you.

i feel like a lot of people have forgotten that, and i hope it helps.

    4. @Vault Thirteen it does help..I just want to try so hard to fight for this ya know? I shouldn’t have to move around somewhere else just so I’m at a place where it aligns my beliefs..I understand the pro life side..but for them to call mothers murders over an unborn child that can’t survive before what…25 weeks? And yet children who are here now and alive are dying from abuse in their own homes cause their parents don’t love or want them and even orphans and foster care child deaths have occurred..and they keep happening..what’s being done for them…ever since this got swept up again everything’s been in an uproar and it’s something I personally can’t ignore..maybe I’ll rest once this roe vs wade decision is done and over with..only then it’ll decide how much sleep I’ll receive after. Besides you seem very wise yourself as I am empathetic

  4. We will make the baby comfortable while the Mother and the Doctors discuss the baby’s future during the 4th trimester.

  5. No state can restrict a woman to remain pregnant against her will – not without violating her inherent human rights.

  6. It’s a great day when republicans and Democrats come together in a bipartisan way and strike down bills by the extreme left and chick scemer that are not needed.

  7. I don’t have a dog in the fight or skin in the game but has anyone else noticed the most dangerous and vocal abortion protesters would never be able to score a date, much less getting pregnant?
