@Ranting Ratite They were adults, and although they may not have fully known the consequences of their actions they did know they were not supposed to eat of the fruit. And also, God did not harshly punish them except to force them out of the garden and remove the tree of life so they could not eat it and live forever in their fallen state. He made them clothes made from animals. He did not make them die, they died because they no longer could stay in his presence. The spirit of life was cut off from them.
