  1. I’m more concerned with our ridiculously high rates of crime and the lack of help for poor people in our country.

    1. Well said…. that’s what we should be focused on….Why not set up a 14 member committee to come up with EFFECTIVE crime reduction strategies… instead of a committee to remove the Queen/King as head of state….and changing the NAME of GG to President!?!….grand waste of time, energy and money!

  2. all they have to do is give all the power to the PM and set a system in place like the US where he cannot sign anything into law unless both parties agree on it. it must pass through a committee before it gets to him. but to appoint another governor general is wast of money

    1. Give all the power to the parliament one man cyah handle so much power. Power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely its easier to replace a slightly powerful mp when they get corrupt than to get rid of an all powerful president that controls everything

  3. The term “ceremonial” is most misleading when referring to the Head of State and his/her authority granted in the Jamaican constitution. They have real authority! This is especially true under emergency circumstances. In fact, the real purpose for this common set up by the UK around the Caribbean was to ensure former colonies didn’t fall into the hands of Communists so the “Head of State” maintained certain powers that could be used to block such a transition.

  4. Executive and ceremonial use the media to vote on it…or parliamentary vote should do!! Black Hierarchy wants a government of transparency that can managed the affairs of the country one that will stand up and protect that Jamaican culture !! A government that knows that their is no place for LGBTQ human rights but to live normal like mi granny and grand father..Black Hierarchy official ..

  5. The people of Jamaica need President only like the United States, no more head of State that system should go with the king of England. We need a new form of government working for people, stop squandering our money away on foolishness. The money it cost to maintain the head of state can be used yearly to buy container house’s for our poor citizens!!!✊🏾🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

    1. @Mario-ic2xg  Are you referring to a direct confrontation where Jamaicans die? Or the influence of the country dying? Because the first option carries some serious consequences, legends never die. This entire planet will erupt if they wanna play that game, we will summon those forces. He needs to be clear about what he’s saying.

  6. I believe we should have one heads of state. Besides he is saying previous commissions made recommendations, but what about the people of Jamaica? What about what’s best for us? I have always said the Governor General’s office is a waste of money. I am also of the view that having a Heads of State separate from a Political Head of State is a waste of money and resources for a small Island.

  7. Anything that justifies a ceremonial presidency is in fact a justification for retaining the monarchy, the government is fully aware of this but is trying to hoodwink the Jamaican people into accepting their republic regime where the presidency is controlled by them

  8. my own opinions, since we are looking at a reform of the constitution:
One, separate Prime Minister vote from MP vote- let the people vote at large for Prime Minister. So we can vote out a local MP if we want a certain Prime Minister..
Two; Set term limits for prime ministers, ministers, senators, etc.. and let us vote for senators as well..
Three- set a date for elections- So the Elections people can set a budget, and be ready, Vote for local, and MPs and Prime ministers on same single date, but maybe not same year. No more calling an election because you think you can sneak in another win.
Four- make MPs have to live in the area they want to represent for at least 1 year prior to running. No husband running one place and wife running another place, even if it is same county or parish. No more living in Kingston and running for office in Mobay or such because you think you can easily win..or to try to knock out someone.. We need represented by people who know what we face locally.
As far as the idea of a ceremonial President or Governor General, to represent us in Foreign discussions, etc, it could be but still, I would want to vote for that person, and if it is ceremonial then they cannot be in parliament every day..

    1. Your comments make a lot of sense….I agree with nearly all of them….but these guys will NEVER implement any of them… because it would reduce their ability to plunder!

    2. A government is just like a company the people are just like share holders.. Voters (shareholders) elect mps (board of directors) , mps elect prime minister (Ceo), prime minister chooses his cabinet ministers(cfo, cmo, coo or cho and other c suite executives) and the cabinet runs the country .. When you have too many people electing just 1 person as in an entire country electing one president you get people storming capital buildings, assisinations of the president , presidents refusing to give up power. In parliamentary system it is less likely to happen because the prime minister can be easily disposed by the parliament if he falls out of line and some parliamentarians can be easily disposed by the people

  9. Make sure everybody understands why they should support this, and if they don’t, don’t listen to them. It’s a shame how some of them won’t even try to educate themself on these things!

  10. 🤨. First of all, I’m JAMAICAN, i don’t care what or who they wanted to change and take on, all i know is that my family and i are the ones who care about us, we don’t have no prime minister because Andrew dont even know or visits where we live, no representative never visited or tour or constituency from miss H.R. only the screwface 87s and the kerosenes they knows.

  11. I am in favor of Jamaica becoming truly independent. But we must find a way to reduce the size of governments and make the process of electing those that represent us easier. We must put in place safeguards to prevent dictatorship from ever happening in the future, but at the same time a process to remove by the will of the people the head of state.

  12. The way UIC a third-party nobody highlights would go about it, is having town hall meetings in every electoral division, propose a new constitution before the people and let them have a say like (I like this I don’t like this) and would amend that new Constitution that they propose in favor of the people.

  13. The Governor-General’s reserve powers are not included in the Constitution. They come from the authority of the King, who the Governor-General represents. The only guide to these powers is convention – tradition. This means the exact nature and scope of these powers is arguable.

The Governor-General’s reserve powers are generally agreed to include:

The power to appoint a Prime Minister if an election has not resulted in a clear outcome.

The power to dismiss a Prime Minister if they have lost the support of the majority of members of the House of Representatives.

The power to refuse a request for a double dissolution.

The power to dismiss a Prime Minister or minister if he or she breaks the law.

The power to refuse a request from a Prime Minister to call an election.

The use of reserve powers by governors-general is rare. In fact, they have only been used a handful of times. An example is in 1909 when Governor-General William Humble Ward refused to agree to an election after the government lost the support of the majority of the House of Representatives. Instead, he commissioned Alfred Deakin as Prime Minister and asked him to form a coalition government (the Fusion Government).
