distributed energy sources also cut down on energy losses through transmission lines.
Many of the current jobs can be transitioned to cleaner safer jobs at the same or more in salary.
@Jock Young Yes and no on that front. It’s kind of a wash. There’s some energy loss in the conversion from DC to AC.
We’re a bit behind in efficient conversion because until this point we weren’t working with smaller amounts, we were converting millions of watts from a giant hydroelectric dam so a 3 to 8% efficiency loss was no big deal whereas on smaller amounts it is.
We’ll only get there by demand though.

We went through a similar transition many years ago. Blacksmiths are now auto mechanics. Farriers now change tires, and so on.
@JSTR Doctors home visits still very much exist. They just exist for those who can afford it. Insurance isn’t real keen on paying for it but in my town, of like 10,000 people we have at least dozen doctors and nurses that come to your house. They’ll deliver a baby, give dialysis, pretty much anything short of surgery.
The milkman just became the Schwanns man, same thing- costs more than it should.
These things never die, they just adapt but typically a niche market will still exist for those who are willing to pay for it. I might pay $12 for honey straight from the bee keeper at the farmers market but I’m not about to pay an extra $2K to have my doctor give me a physical in my dining room.

@JSTR It was more of a necessity. People didn’t have ready to go transportation when they got sick. Doctors ‘made their rounds’ simply because if they didn’t people wouldn’t come see them, so save lives AND make money. No ambulance to call.
Milk spoiled much quicker so it needed to get to the consumer immediately, which is why the ice man and the milk man were often one in the same.
Now we don’t need that, so it’s a convenience not a necessity.
@Polydynamix – OK, we have to put this to rest. I’m 77+ and back then it was a way of life. No, you went to the doctors office. No appointment needed. Generally it was kids who got sick after hours. Just call the doctor and he would get to you whenever. Our family doctor used to climb in his car after the last patient. He came a couple of times to our house at 2am and once 3am. We had an ambulance in our town but it wasn’t used much. As a matter of fact it was kept at a friend of mines garage. His father had a two car garage and he rented half of it to the town. We had no trouble with milk spoiling. The milkman came three times a week. We had a fridge. I do however remember an ice box but vaguely. As for transportation, just about every family had one vehicle. I can remember when TV came on the scene and the telephone in the house. At first it was a party line. Ours was long ring and the party had two short rings. I can remember the ‘slide ruler’ as the calculator of the day. We also had a farmer who converted a school bus and he drove around selling vegetables, eggs, fruit and cigarettes. I’ve said enough. As mentioned earlier, a way of life.

The time has come for the government of the United States and the world to review their environmental policies in favor of nature, and also to demand that other nations that receive financial aid have a real program to combat deforestation, as many countries receive resources and are almost ineffective, not to say that they do nothing for nature. I believe that Biden will make great strides for the cause of nature as a whole. Success.

When the fossil fuel supporters complain about the start up costs for renewable energy infrastructure, they conveniently forget how much money John D. Rockefeller spent when he was controlling Standard Oil finding places to drill for oil.
And how about all the oil spills…the pro-oil people don’t say anything about that!! I guess they don’t have to drink the contaminated water!!
@Billy Cloudy Except, they are rarely forced to pay for the clean up. Even now, nearly ten years after the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, that spill hasn’t been completely cleaned up, especially the oil that made its way onto Louisiana and Mississippi.
