In Germany, they gave an explaination for that:
About 70% of the population needs to be imune, in order to stop the virus from spreading. At the moment, the only way to get imune is by getting infected. If you had the virus once, you wont get it again.
Now, if everyone got infected next week, the hospitals couldnt handle all the cases. That is the only reason, they try to slow it down. To keep the numbers well within the capacity. It will take months, instead of weeks. Unless they find a vaccine.
E.g. In Italy, there are so many cases, the doctors have to decide which patient gets treatment and which dont, due to the lack of hospital beds capacity..
