I’m not sure if this helps or not, but women don’t just run out and get late-term abortions because they suddenly decide they don’t want to be moms. They’re used when something goes horribly wrong, such as a genetic disease that is causing the baby tremendous pain and suffering, with no chance of survival. For example, I know a woman (devout Mormon) whose baby had a terminal disease and was suffering terribly in the seventh month of pregnancy, and there was a complicating issue that threatened mom’s life as well. She had two more children, both under age four. She and her husband made a horribly painful decision to terminate the pregnancy to stop their unborn child’s suffering and save their other two children the grief of losing both their mom and sister. These parents grieve for their baby every day.
As our medical procedures become more sophisticated, they need to be applied in the proper time and place. It is not for the government to dictate what those are: that’s why medical ethics review boards exist. Allowing the government to control reproductive decisions sets a precedence for them to dictate other personal health decisions, such as age-related euthanasia or limits on cancer treatments. The government should provide access to medical care for all—it’s part of our responsibility to each other as Americans—but the health care decisions must be between the individual patient and their medical team.
As for the transgender issue, I had some reluctance about that as well until I sat down with members of the community over coffee and heard their stories. I highly recommend taking this step, if you haven’t done so. It may not change your mind at all. But at least you’ll know you made a sincere effort.
