Chris Hayes Podcast With Heather McGhee | Why Is This Happening? – Ep 107 | MSNBC

Why are African Americans getting hit the hardest by the coronavirus? In part, this public health crisis is shining a light on the ramifications of policies and politics rooted in the legacy of racism. And what’s interesting, and what Heather McGhee is writing about for her upcoming book, is the way these racially motivated politics end up creating bad economic policy overall, producing a government that makes everyone worse off. So while we watch scenes of people lining up for miles to get groceries from food banks and hear about unemployed Americans struggling within a broken system to receive some kind of financial relief, Heather McGhee joins to discuss the true cost of a racially divided nation.» Subscribe to MSNBC:

  1. To show you the difference on the Unemployment issue, I am a laid off taxi driver in Canada and I received my first check one week after filing and I’ve have had NO delays or interruptions getting the money (which I’ve paid into my entire working life)…

    1. Thank goodness Canada set up a political system that is closer to the European one. My government has done an astonishing job at both curbing the virus and guaranteeing people unemployment benefits.
With almost no new Covid cases we’re looking forward to traveling freely around Iceland this summer.

  2. What’s the name of the book? My library system doesn’t have anything by Heather McGhee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Great talk – tragic so much of what Heather says is so bang on, yet so thoughtful and revealing on each topic

  4. I also love the fact that Chris drops the F-bomb because he is so upset and astounded by events in these podcasts – TV just doesn’t represent modern conversations

    1. this is my first listen to his podcast and I was pleasantly surprised to hear him just speaking like a normal person.

  5. The collateral damage of an impeached president’s ruthless reelection effort, 100 thousand US civilian deaths! Ironic that the term used for Iraqi civilian deaths, is now used for expendable American civilians!

  6. Chris, this was an important podcast. Thank you for the interview with the brilliant Heather McGhee. I’d like you to take a look at how much you cursed during this podcast and compare it with your other podcasts. Just, please, think about it. (Also, Heather McGhee never had to swear to make a point.) 🙏🏼

  7. I was not a fan of yours Mr. Hayes, but now I have a brand new respect for you. Excellent podcasts! I really enjoy them because I learn so much. Thank you so much.
    — A new fan

  8. This is great and Heather McGhee’s analysis is far too important to hide away on a podcast. Also, hearing Chris’s vocabulary untethered from MSNBC TV guidelines gave me a wonderful frisson. 😀

  9. 21:49 As an Australian, I love your optimism.
But no, looking at how the american public has acted, and the general tribalism, the public is going to forget about this six months after it burns out.
We no longer have faith that you guys can right your ship.
And I guess just a little point for the progressive movement, It doesn’t matter how right you are unless you can actually make change happen.

I wish you the best of luck.

  10. This talk was beautiful. I’m crying my eyes out. I’m forever a follower now. It so satisfying to hear that we (minorities) are being noticed and understood. #WeAreInThisTogether

  11. “As a citizen of this country & this world, I am heartbroken.” Me Too!
I always thought Americans are smarter than I now realize.

  12. I was just about to listen to this until I search the beautiful sista Heather. But then I saw hypocrisy….
