Chris Hayes Podcast With Rebecca Solnit | Why Is This Happening? – Ep 106 | MSNBC

Something remarkable is happening. While we must be physically isolated, separated from the world and those we love, people are finding creative ways to reach out and foster community. From sewing masks for strangers to singing with your neighbors to organizing virtual family meals, acts of generosity and grace are breaking through what can feel like an insurmountable darkness. Author Rebecca Solnit spent time studying the aftermath of tragedies like September 11th and Hurricane Katrina for her book, "A Paradise Built in Hell". She found that people often responded to these monumental moments of collective trauma with solidarity, courage, and a drive to make change for the better. » Subscribe to MSNBC:

  1. Talking about the essential workers that get paid so poorly made me think about the film “A Day Without a Mexican.” As a society, we need to make an effective change to let all people be able to live on their labor and have a reasonable life with a decent home, car, insurance. This alone would change society by giving everyone an investment in our world. Think about it.

    1. And if you, Americans, could stop invading countries worldwide, then we could all rest easy in our beds. I remember as a child when sputnik was launched and there was talk about war between Russia and America and the Russians were painted as the aggressor atheistic state, it haunted my dreams for a while. Now as a 68 year old I worry about America as an aggressive state with a lunatic ,who loves dictators and psychopaths, leading it. That is very disturbing.

    2. @Joseph Nagle i’m an American & believe me, I’m with you. This dude scares the crap out of me, too!

  2. 85,000 Trump victims and counting. Time to call this what it is: the Trump Holocaust. The entire rightwing media agenda is just an attempt to deflect from the horror brought on by this monster.

  3. Thanks ya’ll. Having gone through some of the major Gulfcoast hurricanes Camille through Katrina and thinking how different this virus is. Even with media . Hurricanes they were on 24 hours with guidance and where help was . After hurricanes we all came together with no labels. Because when there was nothing money color religion nothing matter except humanity.

  4. Great discussion. Chris I really enjoy these long form conversations, completely different that the time limited format of evening TV. thank you !

  5. I am Very Concerned about our Doctor’s and Nurse’s who are Experiencing so much Trauma! I have a group I created 2 year’s after my spouse took his own life called SOS sadness over suicide. I recently told my Niece I’m worried about 6 months from Now and how our Doctor’s, Nurses, Caretaker’s are going to be able to Cope with this Sad Virus. My thoughts and

    1. I have faith they’ll be strong enough to pull through. All Americans must be strong to survive the Trump “administration”

  6. If the courts over rule stay at home orders and the pandemic runs wild, can they be fired? Or should we just shoot them?

  7. Very interesting, but way too many commercials (over 20 in less than an hour segment)… Wanted to enjoy this whole thing, but the excessive commercial interruption were horribly distracting.

  8. I think It’s great to find historical references to what is going on in America now and how this nation still survived.

  9. You guys forget Vietcong lived over a decade underground and even gave birth and held school in underground tunnels – Humans are adaptable and those that want to survive will make good choices ….well based on information and ability

  10. Wow, the part of how people wanted to give literally the blood from their heart to others VS police-state shooting people in the back with a shotgun because their skin-color is wrong (because some people think they can get away with things hidden in darkness)…

  11. Onboard with all of this. But… what kind of language involves “instantiating” a state of “ectasis”? I only ask since you seem to be such a fan of elegant language.

  12. Two thoughts: If we do not control our population, nature will.
We should re-implement Federal guaranteed jobs rather than just pay unemployment.

  13. You forgot to mention how internet has connected loved ones w those isolated in hospital during their passing. love & light to all.
