A man in Iowa sped away from a traffic stop in 2021 with an officer on top of his car. The officer has recovered from his back injury, and the driver was just sentenced to up to five years in prison.

If he shoots- likely driver reflexively _jams the gas_ or slumps onto the pedal? This was less than ideal, all the way around! Is this all over a ‘traffic ticket warrant’? ie Failure to Appear, ie just broke due/or mistaken identity? All the more reason not to escalate by standing in front of car & aiming gun. 😒

No its pretty good training. Too many officers shoot first when they dont have to. He would have been justified in shooting but he did put himself in that situation but jumping on the car.
Criminal or not the cop wasnt justified to shoot and thats why he didnt , yes the cops an idiot to get on the car !!! The cop fail the core teaching of engagement, time, distance & cover !!! The cop shouldn’t get a dime for violating police basic procedures & SOP !!!
This is totally restrain and training by this officer. 5 years , I would’ve given him 10.
I would give the driver paid leave and a promotion.
Rule #1: Do not ever jump onto the hood of a moving vehicle.
Rule #2: If you do, and the driver is actively trying to kill you, unload your frigging magazine into his face.
Rule #3: If you jump up there, be prepaired to use the gun

There’s instances where Cops have been trigger happy but this is the complete opposite.
I am beyond stunned at the restraint the cop showed that could’ve easily cost him his life.

Man what restraint from that officer he had every legal right for a justified shot to stop the threat. Most officers would have just shot because they thought they had a weapon. That entire car was a weapon once It was in motion.
