Facebook VP Of Comms: I Wish We Could Make This Problem Go Away | Stephanie Ruhle | MSNBC

  1. Joanna Hoffman, once a close advisor to the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, has criticized leadership at Facebook for not being accountable for some of the harmful effects the social media platform has had on society.

“As I look at Facebook, for example, I keep thinking are they really that ignorant or is this motivated by something … darker than what appears?”

While Hoffman said she had “enormous respect” for what Facebook had achieved she suggested certain aspects of the social media giant were “destroying the very fabric of democracy, destroying the very fabric of human relationships and peddling in an addictive drug called anger.”

“You know it’s just like tobacco, it’s no different than the opioids. We know anger is addictive, we know we can attract people to our platform and get engagement if we get them p—-d off enough.”

Facebook came under fire for its decision not to moderate or take down a post by America’s biggest and most famous racist and antagonist, Trump, in which he said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

Twitter placed a fact-check alert on one of Trump’s tweets, advising that independent reports found no evidence to support the claim that mail-in ballots led to voter fraud. It then applied a warning notice to a new Trump tweet, finding that it broke the rule against glorifying violence via the ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts’ quote.

Facebook, in contrast, left both posts unchallenged. A number of the company’s own senior staff criticized this decision. Many others have expressed incomprehension at Zuckerberg’s stance.

Civil rights leaders said they were “disappointed and stunned” by Zuckerberg’s “incomprehensible explanations” for keeping Trump’s post up. Zuckerberg has still given no credible explanation for the decision,

Hoffmann said that we have to accept that CEOs and tech leaders are human beings and are therefore going to be flawed.

“The question is, how flawed, how ignorant and how devious?” she asked.

She believed there were a lot of leaders who existed today who were “genius in what they’ve accomplished and what they have done at a very young age” but added that she found they were “remarkably ignorant on what they are sowing in the world.”

    1. YouTube’s affect on society is a coefficient. Parler is way better than any of the other shadow banning crap

    2. I went through chemo in 2012, and played FaceBook games, like Farmville, to distract myself from the pain. Being an analytical person, I was rather good at those games, and started getting more and more friend requests, since these games were cooperative, and having “friends” who are good players is an advantage. I ended up with over 3K “friends”, people from all over the world with many different political leanings. Come 2015, I was bombarded with all sorts of false political ads, including the pizza-gate kind. At first, I tried to fact check the BS, and kept citing Snopes. But, by the time 2016 came, I was drastically pruning my friend list down to real friends. When the news started reporting FaceBook was full of Russian propaganda, my feeling was “What took you so long to realize this.” Now, I only go on FaceBook to join a virtual dance session or see photos of my grandson.

  2. Liar … sits been going on for years and only now when company’s are pulling money from you all y’all want to make Changes

    1. Just like we will have after Trump is in jail.
All these Republican politicians will finally start throwing him under the bus

    2. @Democrats wank to Desmond is amazing You spell your name in English but do not make a comment in English..How odd

  3. So the VP of comms is condescending and makes excuses for their lack of action. Their ‘effort’ is not good enough, point blank. Facebook is entirely responsible for their platform. Step up to the plate, Facebook, rather than crying ‘it’s not fair’ and making excuses. Not good enough.

    1. He sold out the liberal democrats, so of course he gets a nice job at facebook selling the rest of us off.

    2. He was offered enough yummy delicious scrumptious money Money MUNNNAYYYYYYYY not to have to worry about morals or principles any more, and go and shill for Facebook.

    3. @Delboy0 12 years on and the Lib Dems are still irrelevant due to him. He took away what was finally becoming a three party system

    4. @The Geek Is Strong Exactly, the Liberal Democrats where a centre left party and gave the UK a 3 party system. He sold his party out for personal power , having a coalition with the right-wing Tories that went about putting place extremely right wing policies that went against the values of the party and their voters. He by himself destroyed the party because the British public will never trust them again as they are viewed as a party with no valves that changed for a bit of power and it is all his fault. So Nick Clegg a man who craves power and money, than integrity and values seems perfect for facebook PR.

    1. Clearly, these big corporations saw through Facebook’s BS excuses and pulled their ads. That’s really all people need to know.

    1. lolz the entire looney left is all about inciting hate and division and intolerance. liberals are nothing but trouble making agitators who invent problems and create enemies to demonize. Msnbc needs to be on the explaining side of this 12 minute interrogation answering questions about their media practices

    2. a homely sexually rejected and socially inept man starts a platform to rate women’s beauty on a 1-10 scale. That can’t possibly go wrong!

  4. Everyone should delete their Facebook accounts.
I’ve never had Facebook and will never need it. They’ve convinced people that they can’t live without Facebook, but your life will be so much better after you delete Facebook.

    1. Been there, already done that a few years ago. A lot of people have already forgotten about Trump’s 2016 election campaign hiring Cambridge Analytica to gain access to private information on more than 50 million Facebook users without their consent. When caught, Zuck first denied, the then testified before Congress the FB would do better.

    2. Elmosweed wow, that’s a new lie I never heard before. Some skank accused Kavannaugh too with a wink and a lie. You people are loathesome

  5. Stephanie ain’t buying that mess, like me, and a lott people in theses times , that why I love ya girl! Stephanie Rules !

    3. @Jeanette Stilwell Me too ! In this world , I don’t have too many! Lol! But I’m always looking to fine more. That being said , I’m also would be excited to hear from you again. I’m very open minded , and I believe in you , if you give me a chance to believe in you ! Ok ! You can talk to me anytime! So excited!

    1. NO. American TV reporters, even the best, are like a pure cashmere blanket over the shoulders of “guests”. All “Thank you for your time”, “Appreciate you spending time with us”!!!!!! Pathetic. Americans have no idea how journalism works outside USA, none. A legendary example of holding those in power to account, and how a brilliant journalist/news annalist can destroy a shady politician’s career in a few minutes.
Don’t worry about the the details, hang in and watch destruction in action. American journalists should watch this every day. https://youtu.be/IqU77I40mS0

  6. So much for “Connecting Friends””. Maybe Facebook should rename the company service to “Making Enemies”. LoL! 😆😁😂🤔🙄😒😕😠😡

  7. It’s just not hate speech, but all the conspiracy theories. There’s a lot of whacked out people on FB. So much so, people are still not protecting themselves against COVID-19. They think it’s all a hoax.

    1. The virus is real. The hype was the hoax. A shut down of the economy was not necessary. Dems schemed to crank up the death count by putting covid patients in nursing homes. Hospitals were given financial incentive to boost their covid patient count. We can’t even trust the numbers. People who died from other illnesses were included in the count. Pelosi always says ‘testing, testing, testing’. They want the numbers to go up! It’s all political warfare, to stop Trump.

    2. Maharajji NKB … so the whole world conspired against Trump just to vote him out? All the infection rate and death rate is a hoax that is made up? You are a fool.

    3. @Susan C You are the fool being led to believe lies. This is not just another Presidency. It’s a counter coup against the corrupt interests that had infiltrated and hijacked our government. Dark forces, worldwide, face an existential crisis. If they fail to stop Trump and the American patriot movement, they are finished.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend… The Dems hooked up with the Chinese to implement this bio attack on America to stop Trump. Evil.

    4. Maharajji NKB … I hope you know how to screw in a light bulb because it must be awfully dark with your head stuck up Trump’s and Putin’s butt. If you vote for Trump, you are not American anymore. Trump has done too much to put Americans in danger.

    5. @Susan C The MSDNC folks are at least in part responsible for your delusions. They pushed the Trump-Russia conspiracy hoax, non-stop. No apology in sight. Trump-Russia is still a talking point.

  8. Facebook is just another “anything for a buck” greedy tech company. They need oversight. Until then…FB should be boycotted.

I killed off my FB account 4 years ago and have never missed it. It’s not an important service.

FB has literally thousands of employees…they have no excuse to not be ahead of this issue.

    1. They have so much control politically yet pretend they are neutral. I’ve seen people banned for posting their opinions.

  9. Nick Glegg is a liar. Were they sleeping all these years. They help to get trump elected. I hope every company boycott them. Soon the European Union will hit them with some restrictions.

    1. Patrick Pee JOE BIDEN (actual quote): “And by the way I got a lot a, ya know I got hairy legs that turn that that that that that that turn agh uh um that turn blonde in the sun. The kids used to cuh come up and reach in the pool & rub my leg down so it was straight & watch the hair come back up again and look at it. So I learned about roaches, I learned about kids jumping on my lap and I’ve loved kids jumping on my lap.”
That’s the guy you’re voting for? Mokay

    2. Pete Smith Dems be all like “We’re going to publicly shame and cancel you and your business for being a Republican… here, take this poll survey please.” Lol! Let me get right on that chief. You mind freaks have created a massive silent majority 🙏

    3. @15k DOW 2022 And you are going to vote for a man who did nothing after finding out Russia had put a bounty on American troops? Who passed tax cuts for the rich and wants to remove healthcare for millions of people. Who has mishandled the coronavirus so badly that states are having to stop re-opening as the cases spike. A man who loves Putin and Russia more than the USA. A man who hung out with Epstein at Mar a lago.

    4. Zuck hates and fears women. It’s why he started his little woman-rating game. So of course he feared Hillary Clinton. Strong women remind him he’s weak and unappealing.

  10. Great analogy Stephanie with the airlines. FB has all the resources and no excuses not to do more. Out the platform on hold until they do better. It’s simply a matter of priority. If all ads were cut until they got to 99.9%, they’d do that in 30 days. Simple reality. They just haven’t seen the priority yet. Zuck also has no morale compass and only sees $$$.
Also doesn’t anyone think it’s in the bloodline of FBs culture? Even their address is on a named street called “Hackers way”. It’s in our face. The company was build on cheating and getting into other people’s information. This is a sign to all including employees where the company stands. FB is a leech on society and thrives by sucking the life from society. Shut them down!

  11. “I wish we didn’t have to accept any responsibility for our platform” is what he really meant

  12. It’s not just hate that needs to go. It’s all those bogus “news” stories planted by Russia and other right-wing extremists that need to go. Abolish all the lying too.

  13. The stupid thing is nearly everyone of those companies is extremely well known. Why do they even need to advertise on Faultbook?
