Trump and Republicans had a field day criticizing President Obama’s response to Ebola after the emergence of a fourth U.S. case heightened public anxiety about the disease spreading outside of West Africa.
Darrell Issa, who was a constant critic of Obama’s said the response had been inept, characterized by over-confidence and ill-considered procedures to protect U.S. healthcare workers at home and military personnel deployed to help the worst-hit West African nations.
“Any further fumbles, bumbles or missteps … can no longer be tolerated,” Issa told a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Many Republicans were quick to accuse President Obama of incompetence and failing to “protect” America.
Then-Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said Obama was “not protecting our country and our families from Ebola,” suggesting the administration was not doing enough to combat the disease.
Ted Cruz called Obama’s Ebola response “fundamentally unserious. ”
Rand Paul said “political correctness” was hindering the U.S. response to Ebola and that Obama was putting U.S. troops at risk by sending them to countries battling Ebola.
“We have ISIS. We have Ebola. We have to secure the border,” Sen. Pat Roberts said at the time, even though there was no evidence or eventual Ebola cases linked to the southern border.
Then-Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst accused Obama of “failed leadership” on Ebola.
“Gosh, can you imagine if Mitt Romney was the president right now?” former senator Scott Brown said. ” … I guarantee you we would not be worrying about Ebola right now.”
Ultimately, the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa resulted in 11 confirmed cases and only two deaths in the U.S. Obama’s response included deploying nearly 3,000 service members to West Africa to help contain the outbreak there.
The virus did not spread in the United States. There were only two deaths from the disease in the country, and both of them were people who contracted it in Africa. History has proven that the Obama administration’s response to the Ebola virus was competent and effective.
After the Ebola virus outbreak, President Obama created the NSC directorate for global health and security and bio-defense, and he passed it on to Trump in 2017. And then Trump dismantled it.
“I think, importantly, what Obama did leave Trump is a global health infrastructure that we had set up informed by the lessons of the Ebola outbreak,” Ben Rhodes said before pointing to a National Security Council (NSC) pandemic directorate that was dismantled by the Trump administration in 2018. “And what we did is set up, in the White House, … an office that was responsible for managing pandemics, managing global health threats that was shut down two years ago by President Trump.” Rhodes said.
“And when you don’t have an office like that, you don’t have dedicated people inside the White House who are ensuring that information is acted upon. When you see an outbreak in a place like Wuhan, China, you want people in the White House who are thinking about what needs to be done right away so that you don’t get behind the curve, which is what happened in this White House.”
“You need a president who’s willing to hear bad news, willing to understand that they’re going to have to focus on something that they may have not intended to focus on. President trump clearly did not want to hear that bad news when he heard about the outbreak in coronavirus,”

Trump dragged his feet for months and still has an anemic Federal response, abdicating to the Governors (so he can blame them now and later for his incompetence) and thus our numbers continue to climb as Don the Con lies about “the Great Transition.” He is employing his usual tactic “a lie told often enough becomes the truth.” You’re being played Gabe.
