Yep, they see the lethal shipments flowing by air and through Nato countries every week. He chooses not to attack them because he fears a conflict with NATO. Based on his timidity on attacking shipments, I don’t think he’ll make the brazen move of using nuclear weapons.
He’s also rumored to be dying… who knows what he’s going to do on his way out. The Russian people really need to step up and take their country back.

Easy answer: He won’t try NUKES or NATO. Might sound arrogant, but both would almost certainly bring in the US.
If they’re struggling this much with Eastern Ukraine, they’re not going to be any better facing a fresh and fully mobilized US and all the partners of Europe.

Anyone who has studied history to any significant degree, must recognise that Russia/Soviet Union, has never had an efficient military. When the country has won military campaigns, and those occurrences are few, it has relied on raw numbers, cannon fodder, and propaganda. Its poorly trained officer corps working without an NCO cadre, its deplorable standard of weaponry manufacture, and its lack of up to date tactical battlefield ability, combine to make the country’s army and navy one of the least efficient and qualitatively inept on the globe.

Those are not “a couple of REALLY smart moves on his part.” It only takes very modest intelligence to understand that using nukes in Ukraine, or attacking a NATO country would be very bad for Russia, and also for Putin himself.
