Instead of journalist protesting that they couldn’t wear shirts with rainbows on them, they should have focused on the modern day slaves called migrant workers that built the stadium and live nearby
That would suggest that they find something more important than announcing to the world that they are an alphabet person. Don’t be ridiculous.
Reminder: Saudi’s new crown 75 mile building is exploiting the same workers and conditions. So when you “oooooo” and “ahhhhhhh” with its completion, remember the blood and sweat it went into it.

Exposure isn’t enough. Comfortable white people in rich countries need to start giving a damn.
Migrant workers have always been treated unfairly since the beginning of human existence. Although conditions altogether have been improved, YLL have gone down, and public health preventative measures have helped; it is no excuse for governments and other entities to discriminate and abuse migrant workers. Migrant workers are an important fundamental element to international economies, so treat them as such.
What do they expect from a country with such a rich history of human rights abuses, against their own people never mind outsiders.

Alot of the middle eastern countries treat people around the world like crap except for Americans. I saw this 1st hand during my tours in Iraq.
But the head of FIFA still got his millions, right? That’s all that matters.
I wouldn’t want to be called a ‘lazy black money’ either because I am not lazy, and even I was being lazy, I am not a monkey, and even if I were a monkey, I don’t like it when people are mean to me.
“Lazy” is insulting but at least it’s not racist. But being called a “black” and “monkey” are NEVER acceptable.

If the worker were white, at worst he would have been called a “lazy monkey” meaning lazy and dumb. “Lazy black monkey” means lazy and dumb because you are black. White monkeys are rare so if you called a white person “lazy white monkey” it would probably just cause the recipient to feel a “wtf” instead of the aimed for “impotent rage” that you have to just soak up cause otherwise they’ll tell whatever lies they need to get the “lazy, dumb” and finally “unwise to F with me” all because he is black. (or whatever…race, gender, nationality, criminal background, etc.) Weaker bullies tend to snipe from safety.
Black people were kidnapped and built this country because whites were to lazy to do it, to lazy to clean their own homes and tend to their own children.
@CoolStorm RacismSux Slavery is quite a bit more than laziness. It seems like the whole idea and along with many other very bad ideas, like the WW2 holocaust, were built on “might makes right”. I am not a historian though, so the underlying evil of the past is something I can only speculate about.

FIFA is repulsive, I’m disappointed that Matthew McConaughey brought professional soccer to Austin, it breeds corruption.
It doesn’t happens only in Qatar. It happens everywhere. I worked out of country, I must “pay” many things, and even sometimes doubled it up due of ‘this and that’ by the embassy and the state department of the nation I got relocated. US Embassy is one inside that long lists. So CNN, if you want to report the news in fairness, go to the West Embassies too. Not only Qatar.
Glad the exploitation gets exposed. But so sad that no one is asking the fundamental question: why the migrants cannot have better job opportunities back home. Like the debate around student loan forgiveness is not useful as it simply ignores the actual question of ever-skyrocketing cost of college studies.
This is NOT acceptable and everyone needs to do something about it. Use your voices protest and hold that country accountable. This should be everyone’s concern.
It’s shameful for those brought them to work. Qatari government must pay those workers & those died.It’s disgraceful.
In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors – mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result Contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar.
The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector – which is run by foreigners themselves.
For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.
If the Europeans are sincere about those south East Asians, then they should hire them in Europe.
That’s what we do best, exploit others for our own gain. Welcome to your condition of total depravity. I encourage you to find out how these this came to be.
