TikTok's ties to China are once again under fire in Washington. Here's why
By Catherine Thorbecke, CNN Business

Two years after then-President Donald Trump said he would ban TikTok in the United States through an executive order, the short-form video platform is once again under scrutiny in Washington. And the underlying issue remains largely the same: TikTok's ties to China through its parent company, Bytedance.

A growing number of US lawmakers are calling for the Biden administration to take action against TikTok, citing apparent national security and data privacy concerns. The criticism stems from a Buzzfeed News report in June that said some US user data has been repeatedly accessed from China. The reporting cited leaked audio recordings of dozens of internal TikTok meetings, including one where a TikTok employee allegedly said, "Everything is seen in China."

'SNL' took on TikTok with brutal accuracy
By Megan Thomas, CNN

TikTok served as a source of hilarious fodder on this weekend's episode of "Saturday Night Live."

The show satirized people TikTok-trying-way-too hard on the social media platform and it was was brutally accurate.

The video sketch started with a text from a dad (Alex Moffat) asking his teenager to take out the trash, but they're lost in their feed. What follows is an only slightly exaggerated four-minute scroll through TikTok.

  1. This is the joys of being a “public” figure. Expect about 80% of your interactions to be negative to soul crushing. You want the attention? This is what you get in the modern era.

  2. I think a lot of the laser focus on Jake is that serveral times in that song he unironically brings up how great and funny he is. People don’t have a lot of patience for that.

    1. @Christian Kliber Alsing I don’t think Jake Novak is a narcissist. His video was definitely cringey or whatever but it’s literally a resume. Calling Jake a narcissist for that video is like a college calling you self centered for speaking highly of yourself for your application essay

    2. While I do not condone doxing and death threats, I think he got bullied because he made a tasteless song about the Uvalde shooting after it happened

    3. @Riley D Yeah I wouldn’t think that Novak’s a narcissist. I mean the guy might not be funny to most people, including myself, but he is talented. It takes hard work, singing skills, technical skills and creativity to do what he did. It’s just unfortunate that he couldn’t see how lame it was

  3. < must say that you are the most erudite and smart analyst in the crypto space. First of all, you're just awesome!

    1. This is the kind of information that we don’t get from most Youtubers I will get in touch with her right now.

  4. Love SNL, with a few exceptions. The last couple decades have been brutal. We are huge fans but the talent and comedy just hasn’t been up to par.

  5. He performs at Disneyland as a singer. How is recording him cruel??? They weren’t heckling him or anything. Man is not ready to be a celebrity if he finds this disheartening

  6. Somebody filmed him at his job (Disneyland cast member who preforms to hundreds on a regular basis) 😢😢😭😭😭

  7. I thought this was the land of the free and the home of the brave, but now I clearly see we’re in the land of the ar-15 and home of kids in the grave

  8. SNL hasn’t been good, funny, or relevant for 30 years. So, before I was even born. Thank goodness we can access old shows.

  9. the dog piling on this man is sad. he never deserved any form of harassment and if people wanted to criticize something they could’ve just been constructive or just not said anything at all.

  10. Give him an audition already, Lorne. This guy is at least as talented as many others on SNL over the years…and a little chutzpah doesn’t hurt, either. Best wishes, pal!
(P.S. If you make the cast, be sure to steer clear of stray Kardashians seeking to suck up more publicity.)
