Impeachment Trial A Test Of How Everyone Wants To Relate To This Substantively And Seriously | MSNBC
At the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked a question as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation. In the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland’s delegates to the Convention, a lady asked Dr. Franklin: “Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”
Benjamin Franklin replied: “A republic….if you can keep it.”
Today, Trump, along with his enablers within the GOP, are telling us that we can no longer keep it.
The Republican party has proven itself to be a clear threat to our national security, and to our democratic republic.
The corruption we see in the Republican party today can only be defined as institutional depravity. It isn’t an occasional failure to uphold norms, but a consistent repudiation of them. It isn’t about dirty money so much as the pursuit and abuse of power—power as an end in itself, justifying almost any means.
