ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT WAS DONE WITH RESPECT TO FUEL STORAGE FACILITY AT JIMMIT

Roseau, Dominica – January 24, 2008…………. Former Energy Minister and hon_austrie_on_mv_freewinds_nov_2007.jpgMinister with responsibility for PetroCaribe affairs, Hon. Reginald Austrie has confirmed that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was conducted with respect to the  construction of the Fuel Storage and Distribution Facility at Jimmit.

 

The Minister made the disclosure in response to a claim made by the former President of the Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation(WEF), Mr. Bernard Wiltshire that Hon. Reginald Austrie and by extension the Government of Dominica had lied to the people of Dominica and had not conducted an EIA with respect to the construction of the Venezuelan-funded US$20 million facility now nearing completion at Jimmit.

After the success of the Children of Itassi Reunion 2004,  Children of Itassi Reunion 2008 is being organised and will feature activities running from July 27th-August 4th 2008 and October 27th- November 4th 2008.

$20 MILLION INVESTMENTS IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN THE SHORT TO MEDIUM-TERM

Roseau, Dominica – January 17, 2008………………..Fully cognizant of the minister_with_calibishie_farmer_deles_warrington.jpgimportant role the agricultural sector plays in the growth of the national economy and in the sustainable development of the country, Government has reaffirmed  its commitment to the development of that sector with the announcement of  $20 million ECD  in investments  in the short to medium-term.

 

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Matthew Walter  recently outlined the level of investment currently underway  and  planned investments in the agricultural sector in the medium-term, that is, within the next three years.

The Minister made the statement at the Reunion of the Cross activity at Morne Bruce on Sunday evening. The activity is one of many events planned in commemoration of Reunion Year in recognition of Dominica’s 30th anniversary of independence.

 

Speaking at the blessing and rededication of the Cross on Sunday evening, Hon. Bannis Roberts said, ” Christianity and the Cross are very much interconnected”.

ENERGY MINISTER HON. CHARLES SAVARIN VISITS DAMAGED DOMLEC POWER STATION AT PADU

In an effort to assess the considerable damage suffered by  the  DOMLEC Power Station at Padu as a result of the passage of Hurricane Dean in August last year , Minister for Energy, Hon. Charles Savarin  paid a visit to the facility recently. 

 

 

The Minister was accompanied by his Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vincent Philbert.

At the Padu plant, the Minister was met by the General Manager of DOMLEC, Mr. Joel Huggins and other members of staff from DOMLEC.

The purpose of the visit by the Minister was to see for himself the damage suffered to the plant and to get some indication as to when the facility would be brought back into operation.

“WE MUST FOCUS ON THE TRADITIONAL ASPECTS OF CARNIVAL CRAFT,” SAYS CULTURE MINISTER

Hon. Bannis-Roberts made the announcement at the Media Launch of the Real Mas 2008 at a glittering ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau on January 3, 2008.

‘As we celebrate Reunion Year, we remind carnival makers and the general public that this year our focus should be more on the traditional aspects of the carnival craft. We are certainly in a traditional mode for the Real Mas 2008. So the focus of our masquerade bands, our costume builders, song writers and other creative persons involved in this year’s carnival should be in highlighting those aspects of the Real Mas which capture the essence of our unique carnival art form and which demonstrate the unique brand of carnival in Dominica,” Hon. Bannis-Roberts stated.
