This is a normal day on the Columbia River bar in winter. It’s crazy that the boat was out there.
The CG does their water rescue training in Astoria, Oregon because of the reliably horrible conditions. This is an example.

You nailed the crazy part. A yahoo in a stolen boat who was later turned over to the authorities in Victoria BC Canada as he was wanted in that jurisdiction. No clue, no worries, no care about the property damage to the boat or the risk to human lives put at risk to save his sorry @$$.
A few days before this, the same guy put a dead fish on the porch of the Goonies house in Astoria, covered the security cameras with stickers, then danced around the property. He’s from BC, where there’s a province-wide warrant for him already for criminal harrassment.
I grew up in Alaska and have been in some seriously scary seas. This is my worst nightmare! The Coast Guard are badasses that just don’t get enough credit.
100% I did 6 patrols on a 726 Ohio class boat & there is nothing more intimidating, overpowering, awe inspiring, & humbling than the ocean. On an 18,000 ton boat make you feel like an empty 2-liter bottle getting tossed around.
The fact that the guy they rescued stole this boat-makes the story even more amazing!
The men and women of the Coast Guard put their lives on the line all of the time. They ARE my heroes!
I can’t believe the times my relatives crossed the bar in the 19th and early 20th century. Actually thinking about it, my 2nd grandfather’s brother was a ship’s captain whose craft went down with the loss of him and the crew. I believe it was 1876.
The rescuer dived underwater just before the wave reached him. That’s some training kicking in at the right moment.
