State Republicans Pass Unconstitutional Abortion Bans To Tempt SCOTUS

Rachel Maddow explains the pattern of Republican state legislators passing unconstitutional abortion bans on purpose in order to have them challenged in court with the hopes of getting to the Supreme Court for a ruling that would wipe out 50 years of Roe v. Wade precedent that has protected women's right to an abortion in the United States.

    2. @Demetria Karnavas I learned from a young age that the more dependant I was on my parents, the more control they had over my life. This was not the government conditioning me, this was me realizing if you’re dependant on someone else, they own you. I don’t want to be owned, I don’t want to be at the mercy of elected morons. Do you honestly want to be beholden to Trump or Biden? Honestly? Two complete utter morons? Think about it. The more you rely on the government, the more they’ve got you by the jugular to jerk you around however they want.

Millions of children hungry…you don’t care. How many homeless children have you taken in or paid for their food, clothing, education…none because you don’t care. The guy actually happens to be my cousin,and we don’t talk because of Trump. I made a comment about him doing something and he said, “Well, it’s my body so my choice!”. I said “Oh, funny how that goes cuz I thought you were pro-life? He said, “Well, that’s different.” BS! I said how so? Because you’re not the person that goes through the pregnancy?     there is no reason for them to revisit it
    the constitution has not changed, only the members of the court
    I rest my case.

    1. Neither is there a clause that denies women a right to abortions.

      14th amendment, Section 1
      “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

      * A fetus is not yet born, and therefor not a citizen of the united states… yet
      * The state does not deny the fetus of life, the mother does.
      * and the fetus has not requested the equal protections of the laws.

      look, i’m no fam of abortions, but i think that it is up to the woman to make that choice, and not something the state should have any say over.
      especially if it’s because some religious folk think its not what their god would want.

      however, what the government can, and should, do to reduce many abortions, is provide social programs and safety nets for expecting mothers who do not feel supported enough to deal with having a kid.

      while data is incomplete, it does suggest that that works, with a significant drop in women seeking abortions.
      and (more complete) data from other countries suggest that as well.

      maybe take a few examples of those countries on how it’s done.
      Like the dutch, they have a program where moms can get post partum care for both the baby and the mom, for a full 8 days, free of charge, billed to your health insurance.
      and then on top of that the 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. (6 weeks before due date, 10 after birth)
      The Dutch have exactly half the abortion rate as the US…

      If you want lower abortion numbers, maybe increase the paid paternity leave from 0.
      maybe give moms a hand teaching them how to care for that child.
      maybe give them child benefits so those moms can afford a child.
      instead of denying them the ability, and looking away from a problem which often has just been made worse.

    1. Which no one will take care of after the birth because that life was not wanted by anyone. Would you force someone to own a stray animal that came onto their property because the humane society was going to euthanize it? It’s the same question.

  6. Thank you, Rachel. This is some “The Handmaid’s Tale” legislation. These Republicans want women to be breeders. The truth is that for people of means, choice will always be available. Poor women will die like in the bad old days.

  7. Why is it that the Pro-Life camp seems to only care about the unborn? Not everyone, of course. Just the loudest screaming over everyone else.
    I guess after the kids get cut loose, they’re on their own. Just an observation.
