Taliban further restricts women’s rights, bans women from universities | USA TODAY

The Taliban banned Afghan women from receiving education at public and private universities indefinitely, further restricting women’s rights.

Afghanistan's Taliban rulers on Tuesday banned female students from attending universities effective immediately in the latest edict cracking down on women's rights and freedoms.

Despite initially promising a more moderate rule respecting rights for women's and minorities, the Taliban have widely implemented their strict interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia.

They have banned girls from middle school and high school, restricted women from most employment and ordered them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public. Women are also banned from parks and gyms.

The Taliban were ousted in 2001 by a U.S.-led coalition for harboring al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and returned to power after America’s chaotic departure last year.

The decision was announced after a government meeting. A letter shared by the spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, Ziaullah Hashmi, told private and public universities to implement the ban as soon as possible and to inform the ministry once the ban is in place.

Hashmi tweeted the letter and confirmed its contents in a message to The Associated Press without giving further details.

  2. What does this have to do with us? Like…this is the *”USA Today”* channel…why is this *OUR* concern?

  3. Huh, remember when American soldiers gave their lives so those women could go to school? From the bottom of my heart, to all those who made that sacrifice meaningless…. go to hell.

    1. Yes, I do remember because I was there. We went for OBL. GW said no nation building. Then GW put his wife on TV to shill for Afghan women. And a simple mission turned into an impossible cluster-F, with the added drama of trying to save Afghan women.

Yes…that was a meaningless effort and a terrible loss of blood and treasure. But, we tried and their deaths will always mean something to lose left behind.

  5. What’s the world doing about it. Nothing. Thoughts & prayers. Interestingly enough this is What’s happening in the states. Taking more women’s rights away.

  6. So why are they still wearing the head scarf thing if that’s their religion they so call worship but complain they are told not to show there hair in public???

  7. Yes. We should educate them like we do over here, that way 75% of Afghan women can also end up in divorce, be unhappy with men unless rich or better then they are by times 100. Seen the results in the West and nothing good came out of it.

    1. Did you want the U.S. to be posted there forever babysitting them? It was always going to happen whenever we left, sooner or later.

    2. Trump was trying to withdraw the troops during his term, I bet you supported the decision when it was his idea.
