For a while now, I have held the view that we have transitioned over the last 40 years towards what I like to call an “adolocentric society”. In other words, a society that revolves around the priorities and whims and perspective of adolescents. This has been brought about by the increased economic clout young people have had since the late 1970s, when the fast food industry encouraged their employment.
Those who were in their late teens at that time, are now in their late 50s, and still encouraged to behave and think like teens or young adults. The result is that what we call “politics” is essentially high school, in which no one is really concerned about ideas. What preoccupies them is who is friends with or going out with or on the side of who else. It’s nerds vs jocks, A/V club vs fashion queens. We are content to lean against our lockers with our allies and make disparaging comments about others as they walk down the hall on the way to class.
There was a time when politics expected and demanded wisdom and good ideas. Not so anymore. All you have to do is make a persuasive case that someone is your enemy.
