Hurricane Ian made landfall Wednesday afternoon as a major Category 4 storm near Cayo Costa along the southwestern coast of Florida, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The "extremely dangerous" storm made landfall with maximum sustained winds near 150 miles per hour, according to the center.

Floodwaters raced down streets and enveloped lawns along Florida's southwest coast as heavy rains and high winds from historic Hurricane Ian roared.

"So this is going to be a nasty, nasty day, two days," Gov. Ron DeSantis warned in a briefing Wednesday.

More than 1 million homes and businesses across Florida are without power, according to the tracking website poweroutage.us. Power outages should be expected statewide, Florida Power & Light warned.

As of 4 p.m., the storm's center was located 20 miles northwest of Fort Myers. Ian will continue to slam much of the state with life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds and flooding, the National Hurricane Center said.

  2. Two things.
Make sure you bring an axes or something to cut your way out of your attics and through your roof.

Also, As the water goes down watch out for NEW SINKHOLES. For up to a week or more as the water levels underground keeps going down.

If your in bed or anywhere around your house. IF YOU HEAR YOUR HOUSE CREAKING, OR MAKING ANY UNUSUAL NOISES. Be careful, look carefully before leaving your house and walk around it looking for areas around your house wear there may be small holes or out of the usual low spots THAT MAY QUICKLY BECOME LARGER AS THEY BECOME SINKHOLES BIGGER THAN YOUR HOUSE OR UNDER YOUR CAR.

ESPECIALLY IF YOUR IN AN AREA THAT IS KNOWN FOR SINKHOLES.

But remember SINKHOLES CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE IN FLORIDA.
EVEN PLACES WHERE THEY MAY NEVER HAVE HAD ANY BEFORE.

DEEP HEAVY WATER ABOVE GROUND IS A CAUSE FOR SINKHOLES.
As the water sinks back into the ground it can take sand with it creating underground holes that can open up on the surface as SINKHOLES.

    GOOD LUCK STAY SAFE.
