When I was in Iraq and we’d move into a village where we had a secure situation and could speak with the people and give things to the children like candy, bottled water, soccer balls, etc I’d always see the little boys kind of horde everything and take things away from the little girls. Since the boys seemed in many instances to pretty much idolize us I would always get the children together and return everything to the little girls that had been taken from them and then pull the boys to the side and give them a talk about chivalry, and try to teach them that they should treasure the little girls, to protect them, to include them, to treat each and every one of them like a princess. I know that it made an impression and an impact. I hope that it made more of an impact even than I thought at the time. I hope that it was a lasting one. But….back under Taliban rule….I fear so much for the lives of all the women and the little girls in Afghanistan so much more than anyone or anything else. They deserve so very much more and so very much better than what will be their lot. It breaks my heart. They deserve, honestly, the protection to lead their lives fully that we as a nation promised them.

Yes, sadly like all wars post-Korea there exists a corporate profit incentive (defense contractors {tax-payer money}), lithium, opium, mineral ore, crude oil, etc. But the U.S. also sent troops in in order to help stabilize a region that would’ve otherwise fallen into the hands of radical religious extremists. The U.S. should’ve strategized smarter to assimilate Western concepts of inter-cultural tolerence, education, tech, ethics and political integrity. Unfortunately, the U.S. milltary isn’t trained beyond their combatant-intel training roles; thus, we failed them.
Mark my words, in under 5 years we’re gonna see another Iran seeking nuclear-threat capability that will align themselves with hostile authoritarian regimes.
That’s not good for anyone on the planet.

@omi god You’re right in your analysis. My point is that these decisions aren’t made in a vacuum. The politicians don’t make any decisions without involvement from the defense contractors and other financial interests, especially since wars are financed.
The bottom line is that US military adventures are never benevolent and the stated goals are never what they appear to be on the surface.
