I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year.

By now you are all aware of the disastrous effect the latest weather trough had on our island home, Dominica, and the extensive damage that resulted, greater than $45M EC in infrastructure repair and restoration. While the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has provided significant assistance and is working on rebuilding, approximately 50 households in Castle Comfort, Newtown, Kingshill, Citronier, Gutter Village, Loubiere, Bath Estate and Pointe Michel remain in need of basic relief items.

Flash floods and landslides impact Dominica

ROSEAU, Dominica — The southern part of the island of Dominica was the most affected by heavy rains and flash flooding on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, resulting in a number of roads blocked and homes damaged.

The southern districts reported a total of 33 landslides or mudslides in the Roseau Valley area and flash flooding caused the temporary blockage of main roads and bridges.

Family of UVa student killed in Dominica files suit

Casey-SchulmanThe father of a University of Virginia student killed last year in the Caribbean, where she was studying abroad, is suing over her death.

The lawsuit, filed this month in federal court in Miami by David Schulman, the father of Casey Schulman, alleges negligence by the Semester at Sea program, sponsored by UVa, and several others, seeking funeral expenses and compensatory damages.

A newer, better LIAT expected to take to Caribbean skies

ST JOHN’S, ANTIGUA — The acting head of the Caribbean airline, LIAT, in a message to staff, declared the comfort and well-being of passengers will be her overriding priority.

“At the new LIAT, we are working to build an airline which places the customer, our loyal passengers, at the center of our focus,” stated Julie Reifer-Jones, who was appointed acting chief executive officer by the airline’s board of directors this month.

Mr. Skerrit, you are wrong. You may be able to fool those Dominicans who are suffering from “blind political loyalty to the DLP” or “political tribalism” according to your advisor Hartley Henry but not all right thinking Dominicans will be fooled.
Sir, whereas the debate over your nominees for president, including those who were DISCARDED and the one to be DISCARDED is indeed unnecessary and should never have been occurred, it has become necessary in light of your repeated disrespect for our constitution and the people of Dominica.

 The personality of the Head of State can be viewed from two main angles, the political arena and the public viewpoint.

In the former instance the President must be non-partisan with a special endowment to be objective in coming to a resolution on any matter. He should be able to effect consensus between political parties when no one else can. He is a symbol of national unity.
